Dear Friends,

One of our goals at Jewish Aid is to provide inspiring, innovative and creative education programs around the themes of social justice and how to make a meaningful difference in the world.

We work with youth, running Stand Up ABC - an 8 week program aimed at bnei mitzvah aged kids, and we facilitate workshops in all the major Jewish schools in Australia by offering a range of high quality programs.

We engage our community in discussions on contemporary issues through our online publication - The Well. We also provide a speaker service, and look forward to launching our very own Haggadah later in the year.

We invest in young leaders through the Isaiah Fellowship program, and give them the skills, knowledge and networks to be effective changemakers.

As you can tell, we consider learning to be vitally important in our efforts to affect positive change in the world.

I am so pleased to announce that we have appointed a new Education Director, Sheryl Cardozo, who will take all these exciting programs to the next level. Welcome Sheryl, and mazaltov on the new role.

Read below for updates on some of our education programs.

Thanks for the support,
CEO - Jewish Aid Australia
Meet our new Education Director
Sheryl Cardozo is a native New Yorker who has made Melbourne her home. She brings to JAA a career in the not-for-profit sector and experience in informal Jewish education. Her own education includes a Master of Education from Harvard and a Master of Public Health from The University of Melbourne. Throughout her career, Sheryl has demonstrated a deep commitment to social justice and a passion for working to empower young people. Read more about Sheryl here.

We are so excited to have Sheryl on board and can't wait for her to begin next week.
The Isaiah Fellowship
Our launch event in March was a sit down dinner with Shadow Attorney General Mr Mark Dreyfus QC MP. He gave a refreshingly honest presentation about life in public office and his journey from private practice as a barrister to politician and Attorney General.

The opening retreat last weekend in Red Hill was an opportunity to bond as a group, and reflect on what is a good society, and what is a good life? Click here to watch a fun video from the retreat.
Standing Up for a better world.
36 bnei mitzvah students are currently taking part in JAA's brilliant Stand Up ABC program in Melbourne and Sydney.
Each week
participants explore and address 21st century challenges such as social cohesion, poverty alleviation, and multiculturalism.
This weekend we will be having the final session for Term 1 with the participant's families.

Jewish Aid: A child safe organisation

Recent events in our community remind us of the responsibility of organisations to protect children and young people from abuse.
JAA has committed to working towards becoming accredited with the Australian Childhood Foundation. We believe that taking this extra step will ensure we are implementing the best possible procedures to ensure children and young people are safe from harm whilst they are in our care.

On Monday night this week our volunteers heard from Manny Waks from Tzedek about how to ensure children feel safe and empowered.

Please read our Child Protection Policy here, and our volunteer code of conduct here.
