Variety Adventure Camp at a Glance

June 10-14, 2013

Adventure Camp flew by this week, but Variety kids never slowed down. This first week of camp was all about nature and each activity followed suite with this brand new theme. From horse back riding to holding creatures from the Serengeti - each Variety child got a little taste of the great outdoors.

The week started off strong with a very popular event, a visit from Serengeti Steve (read more about this "America's Got Talent" star below) and pony rides at Forest Park. Everyone also had a great time taking part in signature Adventure Camp activities such as ice skating at St. Peters Rec Plex, tennis at The Heights Community Center and and of course, spending each morning swimming.

Just when we think we've gotten enough photos, something else catches our eye. Here are more photos of Variety kids raising the bar, showing us they CAN!

Variety Kids get a Taste of the Serengeti!

Serengeti Steve, famed "America's Got Talent" Contestant, gives Variety Kids "The Reptile Experience"

Serengeti Steve, known as the "standout danger act" by Rolling Stone Magazine, began his career in herpetology more than 20 years ago and has been entertaining crowds ever since. As a thrilling and comical performer, Steve has demonstrated his love for unique reptiles for various celebrities and the St. Louis Cardinals.

We were lucky enough to have Steve visit Variety Adventure Camp on day one - bringing several friendly creatures with him. From tarantulas to scorpions, Variety kids lined up to hold each and every reptile. Take a look at the kids in action with Steve!

Several brave volunteers even got in line to hold a very large snake!

Special thanks to Serengeti Steve for making Variety one of his 600 shows this year!

Meet Bas

The Inside Scoop on Variety's Brand New Sports Specialist!

Have you met the new Variety Adventure Camp Sports Specialist yet? You may have spotted Bas hanging out with his buddy Caleb (pictured above) or teaching Variety kids to golf or play basketball this week.

Bas, a teacher in his sixth year at Pacific High School, has plenty of experience relevant to his new role at Adventure Camp. Not only does he work in Special Education at Pacific High School but he also serves as the JV girls basketball coach, the assistant varsity coach and the 8th grade girls basketball coach. According to Bas, "sports are a huge part of my life."

Bas says that his favorite part about Adventure Camp so far is getting to know the kids because they are a joy to work with.

Camper Spotlight

James - Group 1

James, 6, is enjoying his third year of Adventure Camp. Some of his favorite activities include swimming, sports and music.  Whenever there is free time at camp James can be found playing Ring Around the Rosie with his friends and practicing his animal noises. It is hard to beat his pig impression! No matter what James does he never fails to bring a smile to everyone's face.

Lilly - Group 3
This 9-year-old is anything but shy. Immediately after greeting you with a hand shake and a hello she may ask your age, what you do and tell you all about her family. Her constant smile is contagious to all her friends at Variety Camp and her counselor, Camille. Although paired for the first time this year, these two have been having a blast, especially during the pony rides at Forest Park - Lilly's "very favorite" camp activity.

Matt - Group 6

Variety teen, Matt, definitely has a love for any and all sports at Adventure Camp. He says that his favorite is tennis and he loves to play basketball with his counselor, Brad. According to Matt, "Brad and I have a lot of fun playing basketball and swimming." As a 15-year-old, this is Matt's first year being part of the "teen group" and he has been enjoying every minute of it - making new friends and trying new activities!
