New Media Partner

Emphas.is is has a new media partner: BURN magazine founded by David Alan Harvey, one of Magnum’s legendary photographers, has decided to support Egyptian photographer Laura El-Tantawy. Laura is planning to return to Egypt to search for its new identity after the revolution and therefore her own.

Carolyn Drake just came back from Xinjiang in western China and posted a new update about her recent trip:
“I spent most of the month of July in Xinjiang and am now back in Istanbul beginning to sort through the new material.  My flight to Urumqi was coincidentally scheduled very close to the second anniversary of the Urumqi riots, and soon after I arrived I heard reports of small protests and conflicts in Kashgar and Hotan…”

Our Blog

Andri Tambunan, recent finalist of the Reminders Project Asian Photographers Grant talked to Miki Johnson about his documentation of HIV/AIDS in Papua for our Emphas.is blog:

"This project started as simply a need to find answers. In 2009 I was in Jakarta, Indonesia, visiting family when I read a sentence in a news article that caught my attention: I would say 75% of Papuans don’t believe there is HIV. The article focused on Juliana Yarisetou, a housewife who contracted HIV from her husband. HIV/AIDS awareness was low at the time, and she was told to go home and rest by a doctor when she came for treatment. At one point she weighed 22kg (48.5lbs). Her husband and youngest children died from AIDS, and, after discovering her illness, her community ostracized her. I was shocked by this article and wanted to know more, but I could find very few facts or images..."
