News from St. Jude's: Fall 2019 - Volume 9 Issue 3
Notes from the Board

The Annual General Meeting was held on June 20, 2019.  Reports were presented verbally from the President, Board Fundraising Committee and Executive Director; written reports were received from the Leadership Team and Medical Coordinator. The Board Treasurer and Auditor presented financial reports from fiscal 2018-19.

All reports described a successful year at St Jude’s! Generous donations from our families and friends brought more than $100,000 to support and enhance our home and services.  Operational transitions and changes in the leadership team were smoothly accomplished, continuing St Jude’s tradition of exemplary elder-care. Financial management has been thorough and careful; all staff are commended for their diligence in this area as well as their overall competence and caring.

We thank out-going Board members Jim Longman, John Siddall, Heather Martin, and Sandey Berry for their contributions of time, energy and thoughtful decision-making on behalf of St Jude’s.

Board members for 2019-20 are: Joanne Fawcett (President), Elizabeth Vondette (Vice-President), Michael van Dijk (Treasurer), Eva Villeneuve (Secretary), Neil Horne, Elaine Krilanovich-Cikes.

Additional Board members are welcome! For more information, please contact Jill van der Linden, Executive Director, at 604-874-3200 ext. 242.

Respectfully,
Joanne Fawcett

A Message from Our Executive Director

To everything turn, turn, turn, there is a season…
As Summer gives way to the cooler temperatures and cloudier skies of Fall, we are making exciting plans for the final few months of the year.  It was a fun summer full of ice cream, splash pools and neighbourhood walks, but now we look forward to the comfort Autumn brings.  Our new menu has officially launched so watch for Fall comfort foods like homemade soups and new entrée choices.  It is also the season to be thankful and so we are celebrating all the people in our community who have given their time, skills and resources to making St. Jude’s better.  Please mark your calendar and join us October 9th for apple crisp and coffee at our Thanksgiving “Thank You” Tea.  Everyone is welcome, but please RSVP with Alex at 604-874-3200 x 221 so we know how many apples to peel!

At our last Family Counsel meeting, several family members asked for guidance as to what items or initiatives St. Jude’s could use financial assistance with.  As a result of this inquiry, we have drafted a “wish list” which we have included in this newsletter.  The Wish List suggests some areas that donated funds can be directed, to improve the lives of the people who live here.  As some of you likely already know, we have been receiving diminishing funding year over year from the health authority, and we don’t receive any direct funding from the Anglican Arch Diocese.  As we enter the season of giving, we hope you will continue to keep St. Jude’s on your charitable donation list.  Any amount is appreciated, and all donations are eligible for a tax receipt.

Despite our financial pressures, we at St. Jude’s continue to be blessed. Thank you to our excellent staff for their daily practice of our mission and values.  Thanks to our volunteers who give their time to alleviate the helpless, loneliness and boredom our Elders may feel, and thank you to our donors who, through their gifts, help to make this old house feel like home.  We all have a lot to be thankful for.

Jill van der Linden
Executive Director at St. Jude's
