Building Our Future

Starting the New Year with a look to the future, the St. Jude's Board and senior management team engaged in a strategic planning process that included assessment of our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT exercise), discussion of industry trends with Vancouver Coastal Health, and a half-day session with a facilitator. This process allowed us to develop strategic priorities and objectives for the next three years.

We determined that the core values at the heart of all decisions are:
  • Respect for the dignity of every human being
  • A home-like atmosphere
  • Teamwork
  • Continuous improvement
  • Education and learning
  • Positive employee relationships
  • Respect for an individual's faith, spirituality and culture
  • Respect for the environment

Five strategic priorities were developed, aligned with the vision, mission and values of St. Jude's. The following priorities will guide Board initiatives, use of resources and operational planning:
  • Financial sustainability
  • Exemplary care and services
  • Professional development and team building
  • Building and infrastructure
  • Community connections and partnerships

We appreciate the support that St. Jude's receives from residents, families, staff and community, and welcome your comments and input as we move forward.

Staff Appreciation Tea

Sunday, February 21st, was a very special day at St. Jude's. A group of families of residents who live on the second floor got together to host a Staff Appreciation Tea.

It was made very clear from the beginning that this event was to honour and acknowledge the work of each and every staff member at St. Jude's. It was also clear that this party was going to be a treat: there would be no extra work for staff.

For those of us staff who attended, we arrived to a beautifully decorated room; tablecloths and fresh flowers, china plates, cups and saucers with music to set the mood. The smell of coffee filled the room, a nice selection of teas as well as a bowl of punch provided our beverages. The food... our hosts out did themselves! Savoury items included a variety of hot appetizers, fancy sandwiches, veggies, and lots of 'snackies'. The sweets department consisted of a huge box of chocolates, donuts, cookies and muffins. I heard from staff that I wasn't the only one who didn't eat dinner that night. What a spread!

While all this was amazing, there is more. Following are some reflections from St. Jude's staff.

- Michele Cook
Executive Director

"It was the first time families ever did this for us (staff member who has worked at St. Jude's for over 20 years!). I am so thankful. It was very nice of them. I never expected this. I see that the families care about us and they see us working so hard to help take care of our residents. I now know what they think about us. It feels positive between us. We understand each other more now. I'm glad I came (on my day off). It was also nice to see families visiting with each other and enjoying themselves... and with staff too. It was an opportunity for us to get to know each other and 'chit chat.' They even rented the dishes so that we didn't have to do any work! We were so happy that day!"

Residents' Corner

The residents are benefitting from the donation of an iPad to the Recreation department. Mara and her staff have downloaded a number of interactive applications such as "Talking Cat" and "Finger Painting". As well, the iPad is useful for their regular daily programming like "Current Events" and "Trivia". With a little coaxing (technology can be scary!), the residents will be urged to use the iPad to e-mail and Skype family and friends.
