Our New Director of Care

Hello, my name is Susan Harvey and I started in the position of Director of Care on April 18th. The last 5 weeks has been exciting and fruitful. Meeting new people and learning my way around St. Jude's has been very smooth, thanks to all the welcoming staff, family and volunteers. I truly appreciate everyone's effort to make me feel welcomed.

I feel I have "come home" in way. I began my "career" when I was about 10 yrs old volunteering in a small 25 bed care home in Abbotsford where my mother worked. It was there that I began to grow and foster my passion for elder care. After graduating in 1984 from BCIT School of Nursing I worked in Victoria and then settled back to the mainland where I worked for several years as a nurse in care home in Burnaby. At that care home I worked my way up to the position of Resident Care Coordinator. During that time I also went back to school to receive an advanced diploma in Gerontological Nursing.

In 2007 I took a break from nursing to pursue my second passion; teaching. I began teaching at Vancouver Community College in the care aide program. So now, 10 years later, I am back caring for elders at St. Jude's. I am looking forward to meeting everyone, so please stop by the office and say "Hi"

Summer Activity Volunteering

Summer is so short and such a great time of year. For our Elders going outside in the fresh air is so therapeutic, and appreciated but it takes assistance. If anyone has spare time this summer and would like to spend it at St. Jude’s it would be greatly appreciated. There is always something to do whether it be Bocce in the park, watching a baseball game, gardening, music on the patio, reading a story, sharing a talent whatever your age or interests we have someone for everyone. An Incredible 103 Years

Audrey Spencer celebrated her incredible 103 years just last month. She says that she's sure gotten old but it doesn't mean that she can't have fun and good time. Everyone needs inspiring every once a while. Some of the most inspiring people in the world are senior citizens who have experienced the world longer than most of us. Well, Audrey is definitely one of them. She is full of life, always greets everybody with a nice smile on her face. On her everyday walks she admires beautiful art work on our walls. Audrey notices and appreciates every little flower while strolling on St. Jude's hallways. She has a kind word for everyone, and makes our days brighter. When she calls me "my chickadee" I know that nothing will go wrong that day.

We, employees of St. Jude's, are very lucky to experience these moments of joy every day we work.

The History of the St. Jude's Tuck Shop

Peggy and Michele, 2017

In 1992 our Tuck Shop opened under the care and dedication of special volunteers. I sat with Peggy Leard, pictured below in 1992, just recently. Peggy has been a faithful, dedicated volunteer for over 25 years. Back then Peggy was thinking about volunteering at St. Jude's; "I don't think I can work with old people. I came to see the place, I liked what I saw, what I heard. I guess I stayed. We borrowed $100 to stock the shelves and quickly paid back from there. Then, the money was in the bank to spend on our residents. A lot of money has gone through (since then). Just last year we helped pay for the resident room curtains and we are already back to $1,000. All those nickels and dimes add up".

Over the years the sale of greeting cards, napkins and dolls (all hand made by Peggy), toiletries, candy, cookies and chip added up to thousands of dollars in revenue. Every last cent has gone back to our residents. They've funded blanket warmers, microwaves, music players, digital cameras, a sound system for the Chapel, sets of dishes, puzzles, gardening bulbs and a hot water heater, only to name only a few of the Tuck Shop's projects.

In the beginning the Tuck Shop ran twice a week. Over many years it has been a predictable, regular part of St. Jude's Tuesdays. We did the math.... Peggy has given St. Jude's over 1,150 Tuesdays over 25 years. "I look forward to our Tuesdays. I still do".

A hug and heartfelt thanks to Peggy! I know she will say she didn't do it on her own. I will tell you about the friends she's made along the way next time... More on this story to come in future editions

Volunteer High Tea

To be a volunteer, it takes…
Generosity, a willingness to give your time to others
Understanding, because their lives might be very different from your own
Empathy, an ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and feel what they feel
Compassion, to truly care about making someone else’s life better
Patience, because the process doesn’t always go as smoothly as it might
Dedication and flexibility to stick with the project and see it through
You’ve shown these qualities and so much more, so thank you for all that you do
- Author unknown

As a token of our appreciation St. Jude’s will be hosting a High Tea, at 2:30 on Thursday July 6th. We would like to invite all volunteers, and those wanting to honor the special people who dedicate their time enriching the lives of others at St. Jude’s. Personal invitations will be sent to Volunteers and a signup sheet will be placed outside recreation office. Please sign prior to June 29th if you would like to attend. Once again thank you for all you do.
