Our Philosophy of Care

Over the past year St. Jude's Board of Directors and staff undertook to learn about a philosophy of care called the Eden Alternative (

The Eden Alternative was started by an American physician named Dr. Bill Thomas. His passion to improve quality of life for elders began after he agreed to see patients at a nursing home as a favour to a physician colleague who would be away on vacation. Dr. Thomas went about doing his work; assessing resident's conditions and ailments, speaking with nurses and writing prescriptions. As he efficiently did his rounds he leaned over to examine an elderly, frail woman lying in her bed when she reached up, grabbed his collar, hung on tightly and said, “But I'm so lonely”. He was frozen and felt powerless. He realized that elders in care homes are really suffering from what he termed “3 plagues”; loneliness, boredom and helplessness. Eden's mission is to elevate these plagues by creating opportunity for “life worth living” and is guided by 10 Principles.

St. Jude's is undertaking to implement the Eden philosophy and this intention was formalized in our Strategic Plan 2016-2019. In June we invited an Eden educator from one of the leading Canadian Homes, Sherbrooke Community Center in Saskatoon, to hold a one day training session. In total 35 people from St. Jude's participated including the Board, family members, staff, physicians and volunteers. In addition, 45 people from other organizations across the lower mainland and Vancouver Island joined us for a very engaging and powerful day. Our friends at the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster generously lent us a beautiful room with a garden view as a perfect space to learn and meet new colleagues.

As St. Jude's continues to move forward, I strongly believe the Eden philosophy will enhance the great work already being done and guide us as we continue in our mission.

Strawberry Tea and Silent Auction

St. Jude's sends a an enthusiastic thank you to all the generous people who participated in last month's Strawberry Tea and Silent Auction. The event was truly a community effort from the original artwork and salon service offered by staff members to the dedicated shopper who was able to find the last of the local strawberries on June 25. We gratefully received many donations for the silent auction from private and corporate donors. Volunteers cheerfully gave the hours needed to make the occasion a success.

AGM Update

St Jude's Anglican Home Society held its Annual General Meeting on June 23, 2016. Reports were presented from the President, the Executive Director, and Board Committees. Representatives of audit firm Rolfe Benson presented the financial reports for fiscal year 2015/16. Following the formalities of the AGM, everyone enjoyed refreshments and the opportunity for social time with residents, families and staff.

All Board members will continue serving on the Board for the upcoming year. Jim Longman steps into the President's position, with Joanne Fawcett remaining on the Board executive as Past President. Paul Bunnell continues as Treasurer and Heather Martin as Secretary. Jack Micner is our Vice-President.

The auction was a hive of activity with many hotly contested items. Congratulations to all of those who won their bids and a special thanks to the staff member who found extra coupons in her prize package and re-donated the extras to increase the earnings to the Home. We were able to raise $3,300 for the benefit of the residents of St. Jude's.

The Strawberry Tea was blessed with warm sunny weather. Residents and guests enjoyed the delicious dessert and berries inside and on the patio. Our volunteer, Gaye Ballentyne, enhanced the atmosphere in the dining room with her beautiful piano playing. The Residents enjoyed the buzz and the fun of hosting a community event at St. Jude's.

We plan to make this an annual event and hope that you will join us next year for an enjoyable time supporting our family members and the community at St. Jude's.

Board Secretary

Life is the Program

Summer feels as though it has barely started and yet here we are with fall around the corner. At St Jude’s we are continuing our path of changing a culture. The Eden philosophy is what makes us a community that continues to grow. At St Jude’s we take great pride in providing meaningful activities that relate to daily living. We bake and host socials, reminisce, play games celebrate birthdays, cultural events, have a shuttle bus for scenic drives, lunch outings and day trips. Our Rehabilitation assistant Lucia joins us on walking programs to the nursery to buy and plant flower baskets, the beach for morning walks, swimming at Stan Strong pool, and trips to Safeway to pick up and prepare a picnic lunch. Monday Ballroom Dance Class has become a group favorite, we also provide yoga, stretch class, strength training, balance programs, and Tai Chi every Friday. In regards to understanding and self-growth we explore ourselves through creative expression and have intimate discussions with Trudi our Chaplin and in The Java Music Club. We like to play Bocce in the park, and pitch in and do morning chores such as folding clothes protectors, feeding fish, and sorting tea cups. We read, discuss the morning news and this summer spent a lot time listening to music and eating ice cream on the patio.  A program listing all we do will not be found, but spontaneity and responding “in the moment” is what we do best.

By listening and understanding we take time to develop meaningful relationships with our Elders, their family and friends, the key to Elder-centred community, and person directed care. At St Jude’s you will find trained staff, music, baskets full of scarves, jewellery, books, puzzle, stuffed animals, dolls to nurture, and lots of love, hugs,  and respect.
