News from St. Jude's: Summer 2019 - Volume 8 Issue 5

A Message from Jill, Our Executive Director

Summer is in full swing at St. Jude’s as everyone slips on a hat, slaps on some sunscreen and spends some time outdoors.  We are so happy to be outside!
Resident’s and staff have been taking full advantage of the good weather by taking walks around the neighborhood on sunny days and enjoying the gardens on the deck and patio.  We have many summer events planned, so check out the Recreation calendar.
If you are not on holiday July 11, please make plans to join us for a Resident/Family Meeting and hear latest news about St. Jude’s.  Meeting time is 6:30 pm so that we can include family members that are not able to attend mid-day.  An agenda will be posted closer to the date on the information boards in the main lobby and at the top of the stairs so stay tuned.
I wish everyone an enjoyable summer!

Upcoming Memorial Service

One of the hardest parts of working at St. Jude’s is when one of our beloved elders dies. Of course it is difficult for that precious one’s family and friends, but it can be just as sad for other residents and our staff, who often get to know the person over a long period of time, and who indeed often experience this sense of loss many times over the course of a year. We will usually put up a photograph in the home of the person, but sometimes it makes all the difference to be able to be together and remember the ones we have lost over time.
We have therefore decided to have some special times each year to come together to remember those who have gone “safely, dancing, running home.”
Our first will be held July 31st at 2:30pm. The event will be interfaith and open to all: staff, residents, family, and friends. Our time together will include some songs, a sharing circle where we will have time to share some memories of those we have lost, and a prayer.
If you are interested in attending or would like more information, please contact the St. Jude’s office or email Clare, the St. Jude’s chaplain, at

      Petting Zoo
Summer is finally here and at St. Jude’s we fully intend on getting outside and taking advantage of the nice weather. Our patios are well used and thanks to our Volunteers the flower beds have never looked better. Summer at St. Jude’s is all about morning walks, sitting outside, weekly BBQ’s and ice-cream socials. We kicked off Canada week with the Lion & the Lamb petting zoo, followed by BBQ burgers, strawberry sundaes and of course Pete with a Canada Day sing-a-long. It is so nice to see an Elder's expression, when noticing a goat roaming the halls, comforting a bunny in their arms, or smiling like a little kid while enjoying an ice-cream float. We really do have lots of fun and we encourage family and friends to join in at any time. A sincere thank you to all of our volunteers, both familiar faces and new ones. We are truly grateful for all your contributions. Your presence and kindness makes a huge difference. Once again thank you everyone, hope to see you on the patio.
