2014: A Year in Review

At St Jude's, 2014 has been a year of ups and downs. In February, we celebrated our 65th year of quality care to seniors. A presentation "The Age-Friendly City" by renowned gerontologist Dr Gloria Guttman was the highlight of the event; a silent auction and displays from St Jude's departments rounded out the afternoon.

June saw our Annual General Meeting; we welcomed new Board members Chris Elton and Elizabeth Vondette, and thanked Isabel Wood for her service on the Board.

Leadership team members Sandey Berry and Heidi Horne coordinated a very successful bake sale in June, raising funds to purchase a large sunshade umbrella for the new front garden patio. Later, a representative of the Anglican Foundation came to St Jude's to present a plaque commemorating the Foundation's support in re-developing the patio area.

June also brought the heavy rainstorm that flooded the basement of St Jude's. However, once through the chaos of clean-up, the situation revealed an opportunity to make some much-needed improvements to the flooring, Chapel and Tuck Shop areas. Staff are to be commended for coping with disruptions for the almost four months of the restoration/renovation project.

On St Jude's Day October 23rd, we hosted family and friends, and welcomed Bishop Melissa Skelton as an honoured guest. You will see the event featured with an article and picture later in this newsletter.

We have a special thank-you to family and friends who quickly responded to our plea for assistance in funding the improvements in the basement areas. Your support allowed us to make some much-needed improvements during the restoration work. Continuing donations from all of you help us to obtain equipment, supplies and resident-care 'extras' that make St Jude's a leader in quality care. THANK YOU!

Dialogue with the Administrator

This will be my last Christmas at St. Jude's as I have announced my retirement effective January 31, 2015.

Working at St. Jude's has been a dream come true for me. It has been the fulfillment of all my educational and professional goals to lead a team to provide excellent care and support elderly people to have good and comfortable lives. All the people who are part of this Home give this place such heart and energy and they have inspired and driven me to do my best for more than 16 years now.

I want to thank all my Board members and the 7 Board Chairs who supported and believed in me and my employees and who always put the residents' interests first; my dear Managers who never failed to live up to my name for them, ‘the Dream Team”, and who accomplished so much with their knowledge, work ethic and compassion; the staff who worked hard with patience, experience and caring to help us reach our goals of excellent care; the dedicated volunteers who gave so much of themselves; the families who became part of our family and, most of all, the residents who have welcomed me into their home and allowed me to be part of their lives.

I am excited about the upcoming transition into a life pursuing and developing other interests and seeing what adventures will be down the road for me but St. Jude's will always be in my heart.

Residents' Corner

For St. Jude's Day October 23rd, the Recreation department worked with the residents to create individual self-expression posters which our special guest Bishop Melissa Skelton said touched her very much. Starting with a group discussion, the residents expressed what was important in their lives. The Recreation staff then printed this out, attached it to a piece of paper of their favorite color and the residents created the circles combining pictures, stickers and words. The posters were displayed throughout the Main Floor Dining Room as well as on the laptop presentation, and three residents read theirs aloud for Bishop Melissa and our guests. Brigita kindly allowed us to share her creation with you. (right)

Bishop Melissa took the time to speak to each resident and thank them for a card they made to welcome her to St. Jude's as well as their self-expression posters. (left)

The Generosity of Our Family & Friends

It's been almost 5 months since the basement at St. Jude's was flooded. Insurance covered the basic cost of the restoration but we looked at this as an opportunity to make some improvements. The Board of Directors sent out an urgent appeal for donations and our generous family and friends came through, enabling us to put in baseboard heaters in the Chapel as well as some much needed built-in storage, purchase a new bench and seating for the staff locker rooms, a heater for the staff lounge, new flooring for the stairs and elevators, new cabinetry/counters in the Hairdressing Salon and Tuck Shop and an automatic front door opener button in the reception area. We are so grateful once again for the response to our call for help as we were able to get much of this work done while the restorations were occurring, saving time and money. A big Thank You to all our donors – over $11,000 was raised.
