News from St. Jude's: Winter 2015 - Volume 5 Issue 4

Administrator's Update

It’s been a busy and successful fall at St. Jude’s. For me, success is all about being able to improve the residents’ quality of life. Successful definitely describes the new physical rehabilitation program. In the past newsletter I shared the good news that a Rehabilitation Assistant had been hired on to join the St. Jude’s team. Now that this service is up and running, the feedback has been very positive. Here is an excerpt from a conversation I recently had with a family member:

Rehab has been a gift to us (my husband and I), (literally) from the second day it was going. It’s the rehab plus the person doing the rehab, it’s a combination. It’s a caring touch. Sitting immobile nonstop is not the best thing and more and more residents here need the rehab. It was very painful (for my husband before). His hands were really a concern for me. They were very contracted and it was advancing quite rapidly. He was becoming more rigid. I can now touch my husband’s hands without him grimacing. He’s not so rigid anymore. He is more comfortable. His shoulders are less painful as well. She (the rehab assistant) works with the arms, hands and shoulders as well; with gentle massage and range of motion exercises. There is a definite change in a couple months. This helps caregivers as well. They can dress and undress him more easily. They can move his arms more easily. Her presence alone is a blessing. It’s a gift … truly.

I want to thank all the staff who have worked together to implement the rehabilitation program at St. Jude’s. This has been teamwork at its best.

Another success, for which I am truly grateful for the generosity of our financial donors, are the new resident bedroom curtains. Below is a picture of Marie who has the new curtains in her room.

The first batch of curtains arrived and were installed thanks to the hard work of the “Tuck Shop Ladies”. Donna and Peggy provide an important service through their mobile shopping cart, conveniently suppling needed toiletries and treats to residents. There is a small ‘mark-up’ which is given back to St. Jude’s by way of supporting important initiatives which directly benefit residents.

The second batch of curtains was made possible through generous donations from our families and friends. These should be arriving anytime.

The third and final batch will be ordered now, thanks in part to the Jingle Bells Café and Bake Sale event held November 18th. Thank you to everyone who made this fun fundraiser possible!

All my best wishes to you and your family for the holiday season and into the New Year.

Jingle Bell Cafe

Our 2nd annual Jingle Bell Cafe was held on November 18th in the Main Floor dining room. Bakers were called upon and went above and beyond the call to volunteer their time and donate their delicious baking. A couple of residents manned a table selling raffle tickets to baskets (two wine & chocolate filled baskets and one movie night themed basket) and a 10 pound turkey donated by one of our vendors. Many a shopper sat down for a cup of flavoured coffee and couldn't resist opening their purchases for a nibble. Although the event was advertised to go from 2:00 until 4:00, by 3:00 we were pretty well sold out! This year all monies raised are going towards curtains for the residents' rooms and we're happy to announce over $800 was raised. Heidi and I would like to thank everyone who baked, helped set up, manned our cash boxes, poured coffee, sold raffle tickets and helped clean up. You made it another successful fundraising event.
