Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

Leading Starts with the Heart

Since the summer of 2011, I (Katie) have led our ministry's internship program and had the opportunity to walk alongside 26 interns.  I am so thankful to God for entrusting me with His children and for the wisdom He gives to encourage them to live out their faith everyday.  I also praise God for how He has stretched me these past four years and revealed areas in my life that needed Him.

One of the lessons I've learned is that my heart is key to EVERYTHING.  Did you know that the heart is the wellspring of life (Prov 4:23)? Did you know that "out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45)? Or that "as water reflects a face, a man's heart reflects the man" (Prov 27:19)? Our hearts are central to who we are and how we lead.  My desire is that my heart always stays devoted and connected to God so that I can lead the way that pleases Him.

This past week I facilitated my first "Lead Intern Orientation" as I will have two lead interns, Ryan and Mallory, who will provide day-to-day leadership for the rest of the interns.  I stressed the importance of their hearts this summer and making sure they keep their relationship with God strong and growing.  Ryan has been with our ministry as an intern since January and Mallory was one of my interns from last summer.  I'm excited to see Ryan and Mallory grow as leaders and to emphasis a leadership style that models Jesus' way of leadership.

God has brought to our ministry the most interns we've had at once.  Gabby, Jessica, Tristan, Nathan, Jaelin, and Victoria all came from one-week mission trips. Bailea heard about our ministry at the youth conference last year and Marissa heard about our ministry through the TREK7 website.  With this many interns, I'm thankful for the extra help and for all the ways our ministry will be expanded because of their presence this summer.  Who knows, maybe some will stay longer or come back next year!

Pray for them as they transition to the ministry and what God has for them here.  Pray that their hearts stay close to God in the midst of a busy summer.
Jehovah Jireh and Our Obedience
by Mark

Jehovah Jireh means "the Lord will see, or the Lord will provide."  We first see this name of God in Genesis 22 when God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his only son.  I love in verse 3 it says, "Early the next morning they set off,..." Abraham is prompt in his obedience to what God has told him to do.  This is convicting for me as I think back over the last 8 months of raising support. How often have I been prompt to do what God's called me to?

It has been a challenging journey for us and many times I've avoided the things I needed to do like phone calls and emails. But I'm so thankful for this story because it speaks to the truth of who God is and reminds me to walk in obedience.  Recently Katie and I attended a Sunday school class in Colorado and we read an article about the name Jehovah. One line stood out to me, it read:

"When God therefore says to us, 'I am He that seeth thy need,' He in reality says also 'I am He that provideth,' for He cannot see, and fail to provide."

I believe we will see God provide a team of people partnering with us through prayer and financial support. A huge thank you to all of you who have been a part of this team; we praise God for each of you.  Right now we are at 86% of our ongoing financial support. Will you pray about partnering with us to make disciples in the wake of crisis here in New Orleans?
