|Sept 2012 Newsletter
After taking a break for August, the RLSS A&NW monthly newsletter is back! The summer months traditionally see a rise in the number of drownings in the UK and unfortunately this year has been no exception. Tragic incidents such as the death of Aaron Burgess in Saltford remind us why the vision of the Royal Life Saving Society, 'To safeguard lives in, on and near water' is so important. Every lifesaver within the branch has their part to play in spreading the water safety message and helping to keep the waterways in the A&NW area safe.
The Avon & North Wiltshire Branch Annual General Meeting will take place in Bath on Wed 17th Oct 2012.
We've specifically chosen the date to try to ensure that the maximum number of people can attend. It would be great to see representation from all the clubs and lifesaving providers in the area. We're especially interested in hearing the views of young people. This is your chance to get involved in running the branch - come along and have your say!
Full details will be published on the West Region website soon (http://rlsswest.org.uk/event/rlss-avon-north-wiltshire-agm/).
RLSS UK Regional Conference
The final UK regional conference takes place on the 13/14 October. There's a huge number of courses on offer, including: Lifesaving Instructor Courses, Rookie Instructor Courses, and training in leadership and running clubs.
If you have never been to an RLSS conference, I'd strongly encourage you to attend. The event costs just £35 per day, and the programme/booking information can be found at www.rlssbooking.org.uk. Avon & North Wiltshire Branch will consider funding the day delegate rate for any branch member who wishes to attend the Regional Conference. If there is sufficient demand, we will also lay on a minibus to transport A&NW members to/from the event. Please e-mail email@example.com to register your interest.
RLSS West Region International Exchange
Alfie Pau and Aidan Wedmid from Keynsham LSC helped welcome visitors from Germany to Britain as part of the recent RLSS West Region International Youth Lifesaving Exchange. The exchange started in Bournemouth where the group learnt beach life-guarding skills with volunteers from Bournemouth Lifeguard Corps, taking a ride in a power boat and perfecting their patrol skills. The youngsters then took a tour of the RNLI's training facility and tried out their sea-survival training pool, before travelling to Bristol for some sightseeing, visiting the Clifton suspension bridge, the harbour side and meeting the Lord Mayor for lunch. All the photos are available now at www.facebook.com/RLSSWestRegion
Community Lifesaving Session
In response to the tragic drowning of local schoolboy Aaron Burgess in Saltford in July, Keynsham Lifesaving Club arranged two free lifesaving training sessions to help teach young people from Keynsham how to respond if they were to find themselves in a similar situation. The sessions were well attended, with ten young people from the local community joining in (including several who'd known Aaron personally).
The training started with an hour of basic first-aid (including management of an unconscious casualty and basic CPR) and a discussion of the hazards that can be present at open-water sites. The second half of the session took place in the swimming pool, where the emphasis was on self-rescue skills and personal safety. The would-be rescuers learnt how to perform a variety of land-based rescues and non-contact tows that will stand them in good stead should they ever find themselves in a rescue situation.
The West Region Heat of the National Lifesaving Championships will be taking place on Saturday 15th September at Kingswood Leisure Centre, Bristol. Fifteen competitors from the Avon & North Witshire branch will be taking part and we wish them all the very best of luck!
RLSS UK National Speed Championships 2013
RLSS UK National Speed Championships 2013 will be held 9th and 10th March, at Ponds Forge Sheffield. This event forms part of the talent selection process for RLSS UK Performance Squad. From 2013 the RLSS UK Speed Championships will, as with the RLSS UK Lifesaving Championships, have a Lifesaving Award as a prerequisite for entry. For 2013 the prerequisite is any award from the Sports Strand of the Survive & Save programme.
