|June 2013 Newsletter
The branch committee has conducted a study into drownings in the Avon & North Wiltshire area. Our initial findings indicate that there have been more than 60 drownings in the branch over the last 5 years. It is estimated that for every death by drowning there are around 300 near misses - so that equates to 3,600 near-drowning incidents every year! That means that this year's Drowning Prevention Week is more important than ever. What will YOU do to spread the water safety message?
Drowning Prevention Week: 22-30 Jun 2013
400 people drown in the UK each year: so what will your group do Drowning Prevention Week? Perhaps you could run free taster sessions? Hold a community life support workshop? Give a lifesaving demonstration? Or visit local schools to offer water safety advice? Free promotional materials and support are available from the branch. Together we can bring down the number of drownings! See www.drowningpreventionweek.org.uk or contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
Open Water Taster Session: 12 June 2013
RLSS A&NW has already run the first of two open-water taster sessions at Henleaze Swimming Lake in North Bristol. Lifesavers from Bristol Uni LSC and Keynsham LSC put their skills to the test as they learnt to use specialised rescue equipment including Malibu boards, throw bags, and a reel and line (See www.facebook.com/RLSSWestRegion for photos). If this looks like fun, there's still time to sign-up for the second session on the 12 June. The 2-hour session costs just £4, with fully qualified instructors. Contact email@example.com for full details and to reserve your place.
A&NW Branch Competition: 6 Jul 2013
The RLSS A&NW branch competition will be held on the 6th July from 2-7pm in Trowbridge. Pairs and individuals will take part in a land-based initiative, a water-based initiative, a rope-throw and a swim-and-tow. The best competitors in each category will progress through to the regional heats on 21st Sept in Bristol, and on to the National Championships on 9 Nov in Sheffield. For full details, and to register your place, visit the West Region Website before entries close on the 24 June.
Open Water TA
We are looking for an Open-Water TA to assess an Emergency Response Activity Supervisor course in Bristol on Sun 23 June from 1-5pm. Travel expenses will be covered and you will receive £30 in recognition of your time. Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help.
