Specialty Care Now is Open
Cedar Rapids' first walk-in specialty care clinic, Specialty Care Now, is now open at Physicians' Clinic of Iowa.
Specialty Care Now provides care for immediate but non-life threatening medical conditions. There is no other walk-in clinic for specialty care in Cedar Rapids.
“Specialty Care Now was created to address the growing need to improve access to specialty care,†said PCI CEO Michael Sundall. “People with immediate needs shouldn’t have to wait weeks for an appointment with a specialist, nor should they be forced to go to the emergency room and pay higher costs. With the Specialty Care Now clinic, patients can walk in and be taken care of quickly. Patients also can seek immediate second opinions for a range of diagnoses.â€
Medical conditions treated at Specialty Care Now include:
- Severe earaches or infections, hearing loss, severe sinus problems
- Athletic injuries or on-the-job injuries
- Neck and back issues
- Sprains, strains or broken bones
- Severe headaches and/or migraines, vertigo
- Urinary tract infections, kidney stones
- Second opinions and specialty triage
Specialty Care Now is located on the second floor of the PCI Medical Pavilion, 202 10th St SE, Cedar Rapids. Appointments are not necessary. For more information, see pcofiowa.com/SpecialtyCareNow.

New Orthopedic Surgeon Accepting New Patients
PCI is pleased to announce Thomas Paynter, MD, FAAOS, will join the clinic’s Orthopaedic department in April.
The 1994 graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School said returning to his roots was an easy decision to make. “Returning to the Cedar Rapids area has been an exciting change for my family and I,†Paynter said. “I’m thrilled to join PCI, because PCI has the unique ability to provide Iowans with comprehensive and team-oriented care that spans multiple specialties and uses the latest technologies available.
“Because we’re all Iowans at heart, PCI specialists do all this without losing the human element -- the foundation of trusted and reliable healthcare,†he added.
Paynter comes to PCI from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Hospital, Anchorage, AK, where he serves as an orthopaedic surgeon and department chair. He specializes in cartilage restoration and preservation, computer assisted joint replacement, arthroscopic procedures, including ligament reconstruction, and operative and non-operative sports medicine. He will have privileges to do surgery at both Cedar Rapids’ hospitals and Surgery Center Cedar Rapids.
With Paynter’s arrival, the PCI Orthopaedic department will grow to 20 physicians specializing in podiatry, orthopaedic surgery, sports injuries, total and partial joint replacements, and hand and upper extremity surgery.
Dr. Paynter is accepting new patients. For more information, contact 319-398-1545 or go to www.pcofiowa.com.
