EPA Kicks Off Fourth Annual Energy Star National Building Competition with More Than 3,000 Buildings

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched the 2013 Energy Star National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings. Teams from more than 3,000 buildings across the country are competing to see who can most reduce their buildings’ energy use. In support of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, which calls for buildings to cut waste and become at least 20 percent more energy efficient by 2020, the competition specifically targets wasted energy in commercial buildings and motivates businesses to improve energy efficiency, reduce harmful carbon pollution, and save money.

What We’re Reading

Earlier this year, SIG as a team read “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. We all enjoyed this book and got a lot from it by focusing on the question: Can a good company become a great one? We learned about a few companies whom, through a process, did just that. Scott, our director of technical services, gave a presentation on it at our corporate retreat in June. As a team, we recommend this book to others.

We have decided on our next book to read as a team. It is titled: The Responsible Company: What We’ve Learned From Patagonia’s First 40 Years by Yvon Chouinard & Vincent Stanley.

From Patagonia’s website: The Responsible Company shows companies how to thread their way through economic sea change and slow the drift toward ecological bankruptcy. Published by Patagonia Books, 150 pgs.

Have you read any interesting business books lately? Do you have any recommendations for the SIG Team? If yes, we would love to hear your suggestions. Please e-mail Anna-Maria, our office manager, at: anna-maria@sigearth.com

Green roof...on a bus? Why not?

SIG has recently posted blogs on Green Roofs and Living Green Walls but we never really connected a Green Roof to a public bus. However, Marc Granen, a Catalan landscape artist, has. Introducing the first of its kind in the world, a “mobile garden” public bus, known as the PhotoKinetic bus in Girona, Spain. The best part is it is truly sustainable transportation.
