Funding for Judicial Education Reduced for Second Consecutive Year

The Massachusetts Bar Foundation (MBF) recently awarded a one-year grant of $135,000 to the Flaschner Judicial Institute for its educational programming and publications for Massachusetts judges. The MBF has provided continuing operating support since 1982, but declining IOLTA funds have resulted in back-to-back funding cuts for judicial education in 2013 and 2014.
“We are grateful for the MBF’s generosity, specifically in light of the drastically reduced IOLTA revenues,” said Melissa Nawrocki, Director of the Flaschner Judicial Institute. “As a result of this second reduction in funding, we will need to raise more money over the course of the year to ensure that our upcoming programs and publications will all go forward.”
The current grant will run through August 31, 2015. To make a tax-deductible charitable contribution to the Flaschner Institute, please click here.

Program Spotlight:

Judicial Synergy

On June 11, 2014, the Flaschner Judicial Institute once again held “Judicial Synergy” for Massachusetts trial and appellate judges.  In total, 133 judges from across the Commonwealth attended, including 100 percent of the Supreme Judicial Court and 76 percent of the Appeals Court.
Hon. Margot Botsford, Flaschner’s President & Dean, who also served as the Program Chair, credited the success of the program to the participation of so many judges. “This was the largest Judicial Synergy program we have had, to date,” Justice Botsford noted. “Judges from every court in the Commonwealth discussed common problems and concerns, shared points of view (as well as frustrations), and learned from each other.”
Many participants praised the interaction and dialogue on their written evaluations. One judge said, “It’s always valuable to get to know the judges on other courts,” while another called it “a remarkable program.” “I think the program enhanced the spirit of collegiality among all of us,” said Justice Margot Botsford.

2014 Annual Appeal Kicks Off

September marks the official start of our 2014 Annual Appeal. Donations will off-set the recent funding cuts and allow Flaschner to continue providing first-rate programs and publications to Massachusetts judges.
Last fall, more judges than ever gave generously during our annual appeal.  Since your gift will provide critical leverage to help solicit funds from other sources, the percentage of judges who give is as important as the amount you give. In our case, every contribution really does matter!
We need your support!
