The Saint Paul Hotel's garden begins to bloom; organic compost for sale at Dirt Day
Event offers local gardeners opportunity to purchase luxury compost & benefit Rice Park

Saint Paul — The Saint Paul Hotel’s 6,500-square-foot English garden, beloved backdrop for countless prom and wedding photos and often-admired masterpiece of horticultural planning, is beginning to bloom.

The Saint Paul Hotel’s garden has provided an urban oasis of year-round natural beauty in downtown Saint Paul since 1994. While the hotel’s English garden includes a variety of evergreens, including juniper, yew, and euonymus shrubs, the garden’s prime season is from April to October each year, when thousands of flowers join the garden-scape, filling the Rice Park area with color and fragrance.

Media are invited to visit the garden and meet with The Saint Paul Hotel's horticulturalist Becca Gross. Please email to arrange an interview.

In addition, The Saint Paul Hotel is hosting the Third Annual Dirt Day on Thursday, May 19.

Working in partnership with the Minnesota Waste Wise Foundation (a nonprofit affiliated with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce), we have been recycling all of the organic waste from our restaurants, banquet and food service. Each month we send 26 tons of kitchen scraps and compostable waste to a composting program operated by the Mulch Store – reducing the amount of waste we send to landfills by 85%. The Mulch Store turns the organic and compostable waste into rich compost for use in gardens and landscaping.

WHO:     The Saint Paul Hotel, in partnership with the Mulch Store, for the benefit of
                the Rice Park Revitalization Project.
WHAT:    The Saint Paul Hotel will sell bags of compost – created in partnership with
the Mulch Store from the hotel’s organic waste – to Twin Cities gardeners
for $3.50 per 20 pound bag during its third annual “Dirt Day” event. All
proceeds will benefit the Rice Park Revitalization Project.
WHEN:    11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, May 19, 2016 (note - last year the
compost sold out by 3:00 p.m.)

WHERE:  In front of The Saint Paul Hotel, 350 Market Street, St. Paul
WHY:       To help area gardeners improve the soil in their gardens while dramatically
reducing the amount of waste The Saint Paul Hotel sends to landfills.

Compost is an organic mulch and soil amendment material that is made from recycled yard and garden prunings, food scraps and other compostable materials. Compost improves the soil by adding organic matter, microbes, nutrients, and trace minerals. Adding compost to a garden can improve plant health, reduce pests, decrease runoff, improve water retention, prevent erosion, and keep waste out of landfills. For more advantages of compost, visit
