The Latest from my PV Studio

Inspired by the recent photo shoot with my newest subject, Colombian model Camilo, I've been drawing and painting up a storm. I've already done 2 major paintings of Camilo plus many drawings and some acrylic sketches. See more on that below.

Plus there's a new entry in my Artist's Diary blog, Painting Guayacanes, which takes you through the whole process of how the painting was created.

And get ready for this: $35 for an original drawing! I've put nearly 40 rough sketches on sale for just $35. More on that

All this and more in this Newsletter. Read on!

I've been having lots of fun sketching lately, and I liked one of my the drawings so much I decided to turn it into a painting. I barely changed the drawing at all—just added lots of color—and I love how it turned out. It's a big painting full of raw vitality. See Uncut Latin in the Courtyard here. (See the sketch that inspired it here.)

In the Mexican Sun

Mere hours after completing my photo shoot with new Colombian model Camilo, I was already in my studio drawing, exploring ideas for new paintings. One image of Camilo sprawled in the morning sun on the floor between my kitchen and my balcony really struck me, and I did several drawings before turning it into a large painting.  In the Mexican Sun is now showing in my Art (Members Only) gallery.

For the next few days (March 8 through 15 only), I've discounted a selected group of rough sketches to just $35. Yes, you can own an original drawing for just $35! Look for the ON SALE subcategory in the Galleries, or just use the links below, to take a look at the selection, and don't wait--these sketches are on sale for just a few days.

Me at Work

Where the Art Happens: Here are a couple of recent "Artist in the Studio" shots of me in my ArtVallarta studio.

New Blog Entry: Painting Guayacanes

I've just put together a new Artist's Diary blog entry that shows you the whole process of creating the painting Guayacanes, from the selection of photo (from my photo shoot with Jeison in the Dominican Republic) to actual in-progress shots of the painting itself. See it here.

Two New Camilo Portraits

Two new Camilo portraits take very different approaches—one straightforwardly realistic (but with very loose brushwork), the other a colorful Expressionist work. See them in the main gallery now.

I've been teaching a lot more drawing than painting in my classes lately, and as a result my own drawing abilities have been growing as well. I think it shows in my latest rough sketches. Not only are they more fluid and energetic, there are more of them. Sometimes drawing seems like a chore, but there are periods when I'm excited about what is flowing out of my hands and pencil...and this is one of those times.
