When I first became known as an artist it was mostly for my pencil drawings. That period lasted over 20 years, but I gradually focused more on the larger challenges of painting. Although I still do a lot of pencil sketches for practice, the days of my big major pencil works are past.
Or maybe not! I recently found a great deal on a roll of Strathmore drawing paper and was able to bring some of it back with me to Mexico. For the first time in years, I can do a really big drawing if the mood hits—and with a great new model (Camilo), it did. More on this below.
My abstract work has also gotten a shot in the arm. More people are discovering my abstracts and they're selling more regularly. That has inspired me, and I have 4 new abstracts now showing in the main gallery.
In other news, there are some hot new pen-and-colored-pencil sketches, plus several popular photographic prints are back in stock. Read on and all will be revealed!
A MAJOR NEW PENCIL WORK
Camilo has inspired the first large, detailed pencil drawing I've done in several years. At 20"x27" (50x68cm) this is a large work, and using cross-hatching I've rendered it in an intensely detailed realistic style. This is a completely different experience than painting, and not something I can do often, but it's a nice change of pace for me. And I like the result! See Colombiano now in the main gallery of my website.
NEW ABSTRACT WORKS
Painting abstract works is a nice break from more realistic projects, and a good way to loosen up. There's a nice interplay between rigid geometric forms and spontaneous brushwork in these new works, now showing in the main gallery.
New Rough Sketches
During a recent sketching session, just for fun I used a Pentel Rolling Writer (my writing pen of choice) to finish off one of my drawings. I liked the result so much I decided to add some color. Then I liked that so much, I did several more! Take a look at the new works here.
Male-Nude Photo Prints Back in Stock
My assistant has been busy printing and I've been busy signing, with the result that several of my most popular photo prints are now back in stock. See them on the first page of the Photographs section of my website.
Teaching Painting Classes and In the Studio
Here are some recent photos of me teaching my classes and working in my ArtVallarta studio.
