Indiana Safe Digging Month
During the month of April, Indiana 811 was featured in television, radio and online news stories promoting Indiana Safe Digging Month. Some of the media highlights included interviews on WAWV-TV (ABC) and WIBQ-AM in Terre Haute, WSBT-FM in South Bend, WIBC 93.1 FM in Indianapolis, WBAT-AM in Marion and WIKY-FM in Evansville. Indiana 811's media coverage was great exposure for the safe digging message and reminded Hoosiers to call Indiana 811 this spring before any digging project, as a recent Common Ground Alliance study found that 51 percent of homeowners who plan to dig this year will fail to call 811 before starting their projects.

Alan Dalrymple Softball Tournament
Indiana 811 was a sponsor of the Alan Dalrymple Memorial Softball Tournament, which took place April 26 at Homier Park in Huntington in memory of Alan Dalrymple, a local baseball coach and Vectren Energy Delivery serviceman who lost his life in a 2006 gas explosion that occurred when an underground line was struck by workers who were excavating. Indiana 811 sponsored the softball tournament as an opportunity to highlight the importance for homeowners and professionals to always call 811 prior to starting any digging project to prevent damage to underground utility lines and the tragic incidents that can occur when an underground line is struck. Click here to check out WFFT-TV's coverage of the tournament, which reached Fort Wayne-area homeowners with the important safety reminder.

Indiana Firehouses Support Safe Digging

Indiana 811, Vectren and NIPSCO asked firehouses across the state to show their support for Indiana Safe Digging Month this spring by posting "call before you dig" messages on the marquee in front of their station as reminders to their communities. All firehouses who submitted a photo received a $50 donation and were entered into a grand prize drawing for a $200 donation. All donations were made possible through Vectren and NIPSCO's support of Indiana 811.
