Message from Dan Meiners

Indiana 811 Members:

As 2010 comes to a close, I'd like to take this moment to reflect on the year and the many accomplishments we've made together. Despite the ongoing recession and its effects on new construction, I’m pleased to report that as of the end of November, inbound requests to Indiana 811 are up 4.5% percent from last year.

Any increase during times such as these should not be taken lightly, since it is a reflection of the work we all have done to increase awareness of 811. As you’ll see throughout this final edition of The Dirt, the combined efforts of Indiana 811 and members has led to millions of free media impressions across the state, exposure at dozens of events, and unique sponsorships and partnerships.

The number of Indiana 811 members continues to grow, surpassing 1,000 earlier this year, and providing additional ambassadors for the 811 message in 2011.

Speaking of 2011, please be sure to check out the left side bar of this newsletter for information about a presentation of our 2011 communications plan on Jan. 12.

Happy holidays to you and yours,

Dan Meiners
Executive Director, Indiana 811

The Latest

The most recent changes to the Indiana one-call law requires all utilities, including those owned by local governments, to join Indiana 811. Indiana 811 created a kit – an Indiana 811-branded shovel packed in a box with shredded paper serving as a bed of fake dirt – to get the attention of prospective members. The shovel carried a tag that educated recipients that failure to belong to Indiana 811 may lead to fines and forfeit their ability to recoup repair costs from any excavator who damaged their lines. The shovel tag also included a link to an animated video that offered more compelling reasons to join Indiana 811. As a result 98 members joined Indiana 811 in 2010, putting the total membership over 1,000.
