5:00PM
AFRICAN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR MUSEUM
The NAACP DC Branch joins the #BeyondtheHashTag movement for A Call to Action and Prayer Vigil for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile this Sunday, July 10, 2016 at 5:00 PM at the African American Civil War Memorial located across from 1000 U Street, NW Washington, DC.
#BeyondtheHashTag is a movement lead by Black Millennials for Flint, National Black United Front and several other community organizations to seek justice and break down the barriers of hatred, racism, and prejudice that influence crimes against humanity. Africans in America have experienced a gruesome holocaust spanning over 256+ years. The egregious amount of murders of African Americans by law enforcement unquestionably deserves reparations to finally provide the foundation of the "African American Dream"... "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." In solidarity with 15 African American national and local organizations and businesses, we express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of both Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.
The death of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and countless others are distressing symptom of overaggressive policing culture that has become commonplace in black communities for too long. Without national standards on the use of force by the police, a national ban on racial profiling and effective state and local laws against these practices, law enforcement officers are free to engage in unchecked racial profiling and violence, which threatens the very communities they swore to protect. Too often, the indefensible fear of black and brown bodies and the abuse of power by those unlawful few in blue uniforms have produced fatal results. In this heightened climate of over aggressive policing, excessive force, racial profiling and accountability, we must have a serious conversation about the qualifications, competence and training levels of police officers. We must push for solutions within our criminal justice system that will help keep our communities safe, our children protected and our officers properly trained.
The NAACP continues to fight to outlaw racial profiling and excessive force by law enforcement professionals.
NAACP DC Branch President, Akosua Ali, stated, “These shootings are infuriating and disturbing. I have a husband, 2 brothers and 3 nephews, so unjustified shootings of black men are very upsetting. We need to channel our feelings into constructive actions to implement change. This is the time to lift our voices and hold our elected officials accountable by demanding sustainable legislative changes addressing racial profiling and excessive force by law enforcement nationwide.”
A Call to Action and Prayer Vigil for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile will be held this Sunday, July 10, 2016 at 5:00 PM at the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington DC. We are calling all social justice advocates and community members to join together as we propose solutions to end the genocide of African Americans.

In solidarity with 15 African American national and local organizations and businesses, we express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of both Alton Sterling and Philando Castile--two innocent African American men slain by the hands of those who took an oath to protect and serve...police officers. We are united in our concern with the apparent genocide of Africans in America. We have grown restless with the countless hashtags that morbidly capture the pain and anguish of our brothers and sisters. Our people deserve consistent, unyielding actions to not only seek justice, but to break down the barriers of hatred, racism, and prejudice that influence these crimes against humanity. Africans in America have experienced a gruesome holocaust spanning over 256+ years. The egregious amount of murders of African Americans by law enforcement unquestionably deserves reparations to finally provide the foundation of the "African American Dream"... "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
