A Journey With Many Twists and Turns

How many of you know that God's ways are not our own? Yeah, I knew it theory.  Sometimes that means we walk where He wants us to go out of pure obedience and love for Him.  So it's not surprising that three months into this year of preparation and renewal God leads us a completely new direction, or so it seems to us.  This is when it is hard, when things are nice and calm and He tells you to step a different direction than you thought you were to go all along. What does this mean for our ministry? Well, from the outside it means nothing. You probably won't even notice for a while that things are changing.  However, internally we are wrestling with the ministry God is awakening in us....though it is truly what we desired all along.  Confused? Yeah, us too.  BUT, we are thankful for a God that can straighten us out.

An Amazing Time in Ministry at ATMC Auditions in Indianapolis

There are days that we get to look back at our lives and say "wow, did I really just get to do that?!". We had one of those weekends just recently while the AMTC auditions were taking place in Indianapolis on March 3rd.  It started on Friday evening when we met with Carey Lewis Arban, getting to introduce her to Merlin Gonzales of Faith Hope & Love. We enjoyed our time in talking ministry with Carey so much that it carried over to staying to meet more of the AMTC staff and later praying over the rooms where the auditions were to take place the following day.  That in itself was truly an honor, to pray with the team.  We mentioned at some point in our conversation that we were planning to be at the auditions the next day, as we knew of two ministry friends that would be auditioning and we wanted to be there for support.  That turned into us being invited to assist the staff the next day at auditions. Wow....what a truly awesome day!. It seems that God keeps using AMTC to reveal Himself and His ministry for us.  The first half of the day, God made it possible for us to see both of our friends audition (which they both did amazingingly!) and spend time with them afterwards.  Then, after a brief staff lunch with the team, we started into the next session of auditions.  God had a very different appointment for us than the morning had held.  This time we were blessed to minister to the auditioners as they waited.  This meant we got to walk around to about 80 dancers, singers, actors, models and such and just love on them!  We took the Holy Spirit's lead as we walked around for four hours - encouraging those were nervous, practicing and critiquing the skits they were to perform, praying with them and speaking God's truth to them.  It was WONDERFUL!  We even bumped into two gals from our last Christmas production that were there to audition and, thanks to our Lord, didn't miss getting to see one of them audition. It awakened a ministry of healing and encouragement between Zach and I that we have never experienced together, even in our own productions.

Engaging With Our Artist Community

It has been our prayer for some time now to get to know the artists out there among our community.  After all, the 1heart Arts mission statement/Scripture is about connecting with the Body of artists.  Was it any surprise that God started answering this prayer in a BIG way as only He can?  
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. ~ Eph. 3:20-21
So we laid it in His hands and let Him guide us to those people that He wanted us to meet and know.  And I have to tell was quite an interesting mix of people and organizations.  So? How do you do this very same thing?  Well, I believe the journey is different for everyone because we all have different purposes in the Kingdom. What Does It Mean To Be a Team Player?

1) A Team Player Is Committed to the Cause of the Team
Philippians 2:1-11 3
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

2) A Team Player Is Committed to Resolving Relational Conflict

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! 

3) A Team Player Encourages and Supports His/Her Teammates
Ephesians 4:29-32
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

There are two quotes that I read today and I want to share with you: 

"Well reading all these stories, actually lets me see what I was feeling but could never put into words. People may find this act scary but we know they don’t know. They don’t feel the rush. They don’t cry like we do, they use tears, we use blood."

"For me and my justification for it, it’s similar to the Romans of old who bled themselves to be free of their demons."

Blood removal has been done for thousands of years. Up until the late 19th century, it was thought that releasing blood would cure illnesses or prevent disease. Though the process of bloodletting was recommended by physicians, it was carried out by barbers! In fact, the classic red striped pole that you see in barber shops reflects this ancient practice. The red stripe symbolizing blood drawn, the white stripe the tourniquet used, and the pole representing the stick being squeezed into a person’s hand to help dilate the veins. I don't know about you, but I'll never look at a barbershop pole the same way again! Other Ministries On Our Hearts

Karitos Worship & Arts Conference - The faculty and many workshops are posted on the website. It is going to be a really fantastic line-up this year. I'm especially excited about the speaker Matt Tommey, who is the author of a powerful ministry healing book entitled "Unlocking the Heart of the Artist". There is also going to be audio tech workshop this year.  Even more thrilling is what God is gearing up to do here in Indianapolis. I'm already hearing of several people that plan to attend Karitos this year and we are starting to put together a complete travel package from Indy that includes transportation, hotel, meals & the conference.  Please pray for us as we beginning planning the promo event for Indy that may include a mini-Karitos experience that features a few facutly members from the conference itself. 

Faith, Hope & Love - God has been so good to FHL, as they have been guided into the halls of government this year.  There are Town Hall meetings being held in Southport, Beech Grove, Martinsville, West Indy, Martindale-Brightwood and soon to be Greenwood.  God has partnered FHL with several mayors to lead the area projects and it is so exciting to see things in motion. Please pray for the upcoming Town Hall meetings this March. We would love to see you there as well. Complete schedule available at

AMTC- God has given AMTC a really exciting opportunity to possibly have a reality TV show on the GMC (Gospel Music Channel). They have made thier pitch and awaiting a response.  Please also be praying for the auditions that happened in Indy this past weekend and those that are preparing to audition on the 17th.  We are excited to see what God will be doing for AMTC here in Indy!

When I was a teenager, I believed that I could control my own morals; that I didn’t need a “Christian” God to help me do what was right and what was wrong.  I had my own moral compass and I followed it to the letter.  I believed it was wrong to drink and drive.  I believed it was wrong to murder….etc., etc.  But my Christian friends at the time, they believed something different.  They believed that God was needed to help you live a life of righteousness.  “Baloney” I thought.  But as I got older, I decided I wanted to test this philosophy, a scientific experiment, if you will.  So I went to look for a crowd of individuals that would test me, that would get me involved in drugs.  That would tempt me into evil.  The thought was if I was surrounded by them and still followed my morals, then my Christian friends were wrong.  And I didn’t need their God.
So during my junior and senior years of college, I found the people I was looking for.  And we had fun.  We drank, we did drugs, and we partied until 3 in the morning.  And at first, I thought things were OK.  But then situations would happen that would give me pause.  I would be drunk at a bar and have to make a decision to ride with my friend who was also drunk or let her go home with a complete stranger who might take advantage her.  I started to have this attraction to one of my friends, causing this intense jealousy when she flirted with others which led to violence.  And when I started to become violent to this girl, I began to realize that I was becoming everything I didn’t want to be.  I would get up every morning crying, telling a God that I didn’t serve “Thank you for not having anyone die under my watch yesterday”.  Ironically, as things got worse, I didn’t change.  Although I was miserable, I was addicted to my behavior. 
One evening I was sitting in the hospital after a suicide attempt while trying to explain to the doctor that I wasn’t trying to kill myself, that I was trying to attempt to kill myself so that my friend would feel bad about what they did to me.  My first thought was, this is messed up.  My second thought being “If I continue on this path.  I’m going to die.  Maybe not tomorrow.  Maybe not the next day, but soon.”
That’s when I realized I was wrong.  I am not in control of my own life; that you either serve God or Satan.  Matthew 6:24 states that “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.”  This phrase began to make sense.  I can’t serve two masters.  And I certainly didn’t want to serve Satan.  And if I wasn’t control of my own life anyway, why not serve someone that represents good?  So I started going to church.  Did I become a Christian the next day?  No.  It took me another two years of searching, but I learned a lesson, the most important lesson up to that point which lead me on the path of Christ.  I am not in control of my own life.
So when I write plays or even reach out to artists, I always have this in the back of my mind.  I understand what happens when there is no Christian outlet for an aspiring actor so they go out to start performing for community theater, getting exposed to dark areas of life and eventually become controlled by that.  After all, you can’t serve two masters.  Galatians 5:16-17 states “So I say live by the spirit so you will not gratify the desires of your sinful nature.  For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the spirit and the spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.  They are in conflict with each other so you do not do what you want.”  But if there is nothing Christian for the artists to go to, what are they going to do?  We can’t just expect them to ignore their spiritual gifts.  So my heart for this ministry began to grow.  My desire as an artist myself is to create a place of light, where they can grow in their talent to serve the Lord, where they can be encouraged.  Because if there isn’t anything available for them in the realm that involves light, then the only choice for them to use their gift is in the arena of darkness.  And like I learned, darkness will have power over us because we are not in control of our own lives.
