It's that time of year. Summer is ending and families with children are thinking about heading back to school. Typically, they're focused on buying school supplies, picking out a first-day-of-school outfit, and figuring out school schedules. But the sobering fact is there are more than 2,600 students in Austin ISD who are considered homeless. This month, HousingWorks Austin is spreading awareness about those children, what they're going through and the organizations that are providing housing and services to help them find success.

Mother and son overcome homelessness thanks to Saint Louise House
Number of Homeless Students in Austin ISD Continuing to Grow

HousingWorks Austin has obtained the latest data on the number of students in the Austin ISD who are considered homeless and a breakdown of their living situations. According to AISD's Project HELP the number rose to 2,642 in the last school year. School officials point to a lack of affordable housing as the main cause. Austin Nonprofits Answer the Bell with Donations

Twin second-graders Gabriel and Issac Guajardo are among the thousands of Austin ISD students who are heading into the new school year better equipped for learning thanks to backpacks, school supplies and other assistance from Austin nonprofit organizations. Bridging the Digital Divide in Austin's Public Housing

Last year, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) lauched an innovative plan to increase self-sufficiency in its residents through access to computers and the Internet.
