LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

In this newsletter, we are honoring our veterans and the organizations that are fighting to make sure they have safe, decent housing. While veterans still make up a disproportionate percentage of our homeless population, 8.6 percent nationwide according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, much progress toward housing our vets has been made.

Here in Austin, much credit is owed to affordable housing providers that set aside units for homeless veterans, organizations that provide case management and help vets access benefits like HUD-VASH vouchers for rental assistance. We also have nonprofits that provide free home repairs for disabled vets and a mayor who has made housing veterans a priority. Austin is a special place, as a client of the Mary Lee Foundation expresses in our video feature this month.

Affordable Housing is a Life Preserver for Navy Veteran
After serving his country twice in the Navy, Paul Valdez found himself homeless and struggling to find work. He felt abandoned when the Veterans Administration was too overburdened to help. Then, it all turned around for him with help from Mary Lee Foundation, Caritas of Austin and Front Steps. Watch his video feature here.

Disabled War Hero Finds Help to Conquer Barriers in his Home

Alfonso Zapata defended our freedom in two wars, but at age 83 he could no longer move around his home freely because of disabilities. He was afraid he would have to leave the place he had called home for 60 years. Meals on Wheels and More and its partners in home repair came to the rescue. Read more.
