There has been a lot to celebrate this year, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. Times are incredibly tough here at the Environment Centre NT – as you know, our operational funding has been cut and we need to think carefully about how we work with you to remain a strong voice for the environment. But, we are united and strong and every single one of us is as committed as ever to building the voice of the Environment Centre NT – our voice, your voice - the voice of the community.
It is so important that our position in the environmental debate is sustained in 2015 but we can’t do it without out you so please, stand with us for the environment. Make a donation, become a regular giver or join us as a Member today.
Thanks to everyone who came to or helped out at our Night on the Reef fundraiser. We raised over $2500 to keep The Environment Centre NT alive. Big thanks also to Indo-Pacific Marine for providing the venue and food and to Ethical Adventures, Fun Supply, COOLmob, Q Bar and Rob Halls for donating the prizes for our raffle. Congratulations to those who won!
We’d also like to thank our fantastic legal team - David Morris of the Environmental Defenders Office NT, along with barristers Alastair Wyvill and Nick Kelly for representing us so well in the Supreme Court this week – to Stand Up for our Top End Rivers - at no cost to the Environment Centre.
Without the generous support of our legal team, and ongoing support from our staff, board, members and the community, we would not have been able to run the case.
Thank you also to the community members and industry leaders who joined us in the extreme heat on Monday morning to stand up to protect Top End rivers. We acknowledge The Wilderness Society and Northern Land Council for their support.
We are proud to have had the opportunity to work together with others to hold the Minister for Land Resource Management to account for his review of water licence decisions, despite both the Environment Centre NT and the Environmental Defenders Office NT suffering total cuts in operational funding.
We feel this case demonstrates the ongoing need for community environmental groups to be supported in shining a light on important environmental issues.Justice Hiley has reserved his decision on the case. We expect that His Honour will hand down his decision some time in early 2015.
From all of us here, thank you. Thank you for your trust, your passion and your commitment to the Environment Centre NT. Together, we will continue to stand with you as a strong voice for the environment. We wish all our members and supporters a safe and happy festive season.
The Environment Centre NT office will be closed from Monday 20 December and reopen on Monday 5 January.
