GVI PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS

GVI is pleased to announce the winners of our 2014 Photo Contest.  Congratulations to Lola Lopez, Mohammad Hasan and Paula Francis, who each won $1,000 towards their projects!  We showcase their photos and projects below, and will follow project progress in the coming months.

CATEGORY: GLOBAL VISIONARY
WINNER: Mr. Mohammad Hasan, Bangladesh

PROJECT: The name of the project is "Salt" - it is a documentary photography project on climate change, adaptation and migration from the coastline areas of Bangladesh. I have been shooting this since year 2010.  The project is still ongoing because of its nature, as I want it to shoot visual changes of the effect of climate.  If I receive the funding I will be able to revisit remote areas of coastal belt to document it further.  The picture was taken at Gabura Union, Satkhira, Bangladesh on 11th May 2011.

CATEGORY: UN CHANGE AGENT
WINNER: Ms. Lola Lopez
PROJECT:
Post conflict reconstruction process in Gaza, through support to UNRWA, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.  I believe that my purpose in this world is to contribute to justice and peace. I believe all children should have the right to a home, education, health and a citizenship.  This photograph was taken in a Palestinian Refugee Camp in South Lebanon in 2011. I wonder if they're still smiling.  I wonder if they're still alive.  I wonder if they'll ever return home to a peaceful Palestine.

CATEGORY: UN CHANGE AGENT AND GLOBAL VISIONARY
WINNER: Ms. Paula Francis, USA
PROJECT:
Happiness Walk, Gross National Happiness, USA. We have walked from Montreal, Canada to Washington DC and are continuing our walk across the US to inspire people and communities toward action for healthy and sustainable futures for all. We are inspired by the UN initiative on creating expanded measure of progress (including happiness) as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We share messages of hope and we encourage engagement in carrying out these important initiatives. This is our pursuit of happiness, our purpose and calling - what gives our lives meaning.

GVI PARTNERSHIP APPEAL

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Global Vision Institute (GVI) seeks your partnership in co-creating a more responsive and effective UN system.

So much of the international system persists in applying outmoded, siloed and short-sighted approaches to what are clearly deeper, systemic, and 21st century problems.  Over the last ten years, GVI has worked with hundreds of diplomats, UN staff, civil society representatives and members of the private sector.  These colleagues have identified for themselves how critical it is for the UN to embody, compel and demand the very principles upon which the organization was founded.  They assert the centrality of the UN’s role in representing universal values and an expansive identity. They call for ethics, excellence, inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, cooperation, integrity, balance, risk-taking and adaptability. And they call for the practical operationalization of these ideals in behaviours, relationships, policies, programming, leadership, and everyday decisions.  Across all sectors, we aim to "walk the talk", and to build skills to effectively navigate the complex ecosystem that is the current global landscape.

GVI supports people in reclaiming their power to make a difference, as we are a network, catalyst and think tank for a values-driven system. We work with different entities to facilitate the personal, organizational and social  transformation needed to align processes, policy and practice with the UN values for peace, justice, equality, human dignity, and environmental sustainability. GVI is unique in employing a participatory systems approach in the evolution toward fuller expression of these values.  Applying data-driven values assessments and analysis, and coaching workshops, we focus on the role of the individual actor in identifying with universal values, and empower actors and teams in and around the UN to translate values into organizational culture.

But we need your help to continue our mission. In 2014, funding allowed us to revitalize our communications and achieve outreach targets, building on capacity development in areas such as change management, complex systems, and courage in leadership.  We anticipate a variety of outcomes in 2015, including more collaborative UN country teams and programming, advancing human rights culture at country level, projects to raise awareness of climate change impact and promote holistic development models, as well as support to UN work with refugees. Your contribution to the attached activities and budget would support this ongoing effort. Together, we can align purpose with system functioning, partnering for a transformed future.

We hope you will join us.
Yours sincerely,
Alisa Clarke
