Illness Policy Reminders

from Kelly Basham, School Nurse

It's that time of year again! At St. James', we take steps regularly to keep our children healthy, and we need your support.

The most effective thing you can do to help us in that effort is not to send a sick child to school. Students should always remain home when they have a fever of 100 ÂºF (38 ÂºC) or above. They should remain home until they are fever free for 24 hours, without the aid of fever reducers. This is the school's policy, and it will be enforced. By coming to school sick, a child puts his or her classmates, teachers, and school staff at risk of also becoming ill.

If a student develops a temperature of 100 ÂºF or higher while at school, or if your child is too sick to benefit from school and unable to participate in class comfortably, you will be called to take your child home from school. Children with diarrhea, vomiting, significant cold symptoms, rashes or other illnesses – even if they do not have a fever – should also remain at home.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our children and our school healthy. For clarity on any of these points, please consult the Parent & Student Handbook or contact Nurse Basham.

Opportunity for St. James' Grandparents

from Ryanne Plaisance, Associate Director of Advancement

We have heard from many grandparents that they would like to be more involved in our community, and in response, we are starting a St. James' Grandparents Team in February! We are looking for a few grandparents to help shape and define the mission of this team, which we hope will allow individuals to form lasting friendships and provide wonderful learning opportunities for our students. If you know of a grandparent that is interested, please contact Ryanne Plaisance. We will be hosting a brainstorming meeting with interested grandparents in early February.

Oliver Chin to Visit Campus on January 30

from Christina Olague, Library Media Center Specialist

On Friday, January 30, 2015, Oliver Chin will visit our school and talk to our students about his new book The Year of the Sheep: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac.

2015 is the Year of the Sheep, and this book is guaranteed to be a favorite for readers. The book is about a lamb named Sydney, who learns the lay of the land from her parents and that is important to fit in with the flock! Sydney befriends the shepherd girl, Shi, and together they learn what kind of character a sheep possesses! But how can Sydney uniquely help when trouble arises? You will have to read the book to find out!

Please help welcome acclaimed author Oliver Chin to St. James’. If you'd like to preorder autographed copies of his books, send in the order form (available here) and payment to Ms. Olague.

Brownies Bring Christmas Cheer to Seniors at St. James' Manor

from Jonathan Dar, Second Grade Teacher

See more photos...

The Christmas season can be one of the most wonderful times of the year. Sadly, however, for seniors who are alone, it can stir up feelings of isolation and loss.

In December, our very own Brownie Girl Scout troop shared their holiday cheer with the seniors at St. James’ Manor. Troop 16065 provided a bountiful feast and sang classic songs. The faces of the seniors beamed with joy as the Brownies sang Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Silent Night. Parents Lois Park, Ellen Park, and Sophia Lee coordinated the event.

Samantha Dar, the social worker at the Manor, said that the residents could not stop talking about the beautiful celebration and the generosity of the Brownies, their parents, and the troop leaders. The experience made the seniors feel that they were being honored and – most importantly – not forgotten.
