St. James' News Update

Friday, January 11, 2013

The Admission season is at its peak, and we have seen a record number of inquiries. The applications are rolling in! Open Houses are filled with excited faces, and over and over again in prospective parent interviews, I hear that St. James’ is their first choice.

This is largely, in part, to you! In September I wrote about some of the things that make St. James’ so special. I gave you some talking points and then asked you to tell a friend about St. James’. And you did! When we ask prospective families how they heard about St. James’, they most often mention a friend, a current family they know and who speaks so highly of our school. You have done a remarkable job at spreading the word, letting families know that this special little jewel exists right in their backyards.

Because of the amazing job you do sharing what you love about St. James',  I am asking you to please tell another friend. Encourage them to come see us or just to give us a call. Below are some important, upcoming dates:

Kindergarten – Sixth Grade Open House Tuesday, January 15 at 9:00 A.M.
Preschool Open House Tuesday, January 15 at 3:00 P.M.
Preschool Small Group Tours Wednesday mornings at 9:00 A.M.
Application Due Date Thursday, January 17

If your friends are interested in attending any of these events, please ask them to call Kimberly in the Admission Office at (213) 382-2315 ext. 255.

If you would like to apply for a younger sibling, please submit your application by Thursday, January 17. The application can be found on the St. James’ website or if you would prefer to drop by the Front Office, Stephanie and Jennifer would be happy to give you an admission folder.

Thanks to you, the word is out about our special neighborhood school. I appreciate your gracious support and encouragement. Here’s to a banner admission season!

ANNUAL FUND UPDATE

Our Climb to 100% Participation

The parent community is well on its way to joining the Faculty, Staff, Administration and the Board of Trustees in achieving 100% participation in his year's Annual Fund Campaign.  Last year was historic as we received 100% parent participation for the very first time.

Overall, we are currently at 60% parent participation with Kindergarten and Grade 6 leading neck-in-neck at 70%.  Grade 1 is right behind them so it is anyone's guess who will cross the finish line first.

Free Dress - we know the students look forward to celebrating 100% participation by receiving a Free Dress Day as soon as we achieve this goal.

Reminder packets were sent home via Backpack Express this week for those families who have not yet made their pledge.    If you received a reminder packet, please make sure you return your pledge form by Tuesday, January 15th, or visit the school's website giving page.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Learning Specialist Wine and Cheese Reception

Wednesday, January 23, 5:00-6:30 pm

Next year, St. James' will be hiring a full time Learning Specialist to provide individualized attention to children when and where they need it most, whether it is a need for remediation or enrichment. As each child learns differently, we think this addition to our school with be a truly positive change for students, staff, and parents. In an effort to help our community make this adjustment, we have invited Matt Kustura, K-8 Learning Support Specialist for Marymount of Santa Barbara, to join us for a wine and cheese reception at St. James. This is a time to learn from him and hear first hand how a Learning Specialist can impact education. Please join us in St. James' Hall with enthusiasm, open hearts and minds, and questions as we welcome Matt. No RSVP necessary.

Service Learning Update

Here we are at the end of the first full week of school for 2013!  We closed 2012 with a couple of amazing projects.  Our first grade book drive was very successful as we collected 239 books.  I delivered those to the very grateful workers at the Good Shepherd facility.  Our second graders gave toys, clothes, food, and money, helping two families that visit the St. James’ Soup Kitchen have a special Christmas.  Stay tuned as we have other projects waiting in the wings.

Does one of your resolutions for the year have something to do with getting in better shape?  Hike It Up is a service opportunity that could be for you.  Here is their mission statement:

“Hike It Up brings communities and families together by producing progressive events and fundraisers that involve community based activities and improvement projects that serve youth, family, individual, environmental, and school-based programs.”

On Sunday, January 27, 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., Hike It Up will be hosting a Sunset Hike at Fryman Canyon Park in Studio City.  The organizers are asking all participants to bring socks, blankets, jackets, and sweaters to donate to homeless shelters in our community.  For more information you can check their website at www.hikeitup.org.

Community Gathering

This morning, families, students and faculty gathered together in St. James' Hall to partake in our January Community Gathering where we celebrated the winners of this month's "Student of the Month." Deborah David shared with us the stories of these students greatest strengths. We heard of academic accomplishments, outstanding story telling skills, and wonderful senses of humor. Congratulations to all of this month's winners!

St. James' All School Chapel Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Wednesday, January 16

As we posted in our electronic calendar, St. James’ All-School chapel service celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 8:45 am.  A few students from  each grade will explore what they learned about Dr. King by reciting poems or reading essays and St. James’ Children’s Choir will offer anthems during the service.

Parents are always welcome to attend the chapel services which help to develop your child’s spiritual life. Please consider joining your children at this service. You are also encouraged to sit with your child in the church. Please park your car in the parking lot across from the school and wait in the parking lot between the church and the school for your child until they process to the church.  Thank you.

At this service we will be taking an offering of non-perishable goods which will be donated to the Hope-Net Food Closet Program sponsored by the Churches (including St. James') in the Mid-Wilshire area. Please bring your donations to school.

Suggested items include: Canned goods - fruit, vegetables, fish and meat, rice, cereals, peanut butter, dried beans and macaroni.
