Please Welcome Our New Science Teacher, Mark Chitjian!

from Deborah David, Head of School

Words like “dynamic” and “brilliant” are hackneyed and often hyperbolic adjectives applied to elicit awe in the reader. Such is not the case with Mark Chitjian. Mr. Chitjian holds his degree from Caltech with specializations in engineering and applied science. His knowledge of all areas of science, however, is comprehensive if not encyclopedic, and his passion for every facet of the field is inspiring and galvanizing. And, yes, Mark Chitjian is truly both brilliant and dynamic. And as of Monday, February 2, 2015, Mr. Chitjian will be St. James’ new Science Specialist.

The father of two charming and nearly grown daughters, Mark began his instructional career in the high school sciences but was lured into professional work that eventually left him very little time for teaching. Mark has served as an environmental scientist with AVES, AeroVironment, Inc. and as a senior development engineer with the Center for Environmental Research and Technology at UC Riverside. Mr. Chitjian has also managed the “Destination Imagination” program at Norma Coombs Alternative School, where he served as administrator and oversaw district-wide coordination of the program. In addition to his recent work as an environmental scientist at Tetra Tech, Mr. Chitjian has, amazingly, also found time to volunteer as a science teacher at Meher Montessori, teach in the Pasadena Unified School District, and serve as a long-term substitute teaching 7th and 10th grade science at Marlborough School for Girls, where he just completed his tenure.

A devoted hiker, gardener, and sports enthusiast who has coached both boys’ and girls’ AYSO soccer, Mr. Chitjian is well acquainted with the needs and abundant energy of our younger children. With his passion for science, love of children, and breadth of scientific knowledge, Mark Chitjian is perfectly positioned to deepen and strengthen our science program and to build on the engaging foundational work of his predecessor, Lauren Rodrigues. Mr. Chitjian radiates a contagious enthusiasm for life wherever he goes. In fact, one of the 6th graders who served on Mr. Chitjian’s interview committee for this position aptly said, “I just love his energy.” Actually, we all do… and are confident you will, too.

Our special thanks to the ever-stalwart Patti Meyers, who held down the fort as we searched for exactly the right teacher to steer our science program into the next decade. Ms. Meyers has agreed to remain with us for the next week, working side-by-side with Mr. Chitjian in the science lab to ensure an elegant transition. Please take the time to thank Patti Meyers and to welcome Mark Chitjian to the St. James’ family!

Theodicy Jazz Collective Peformance on February 3

On Tuesday, February 3, the Theodicy Jazz Collective will lead a session for our students on jazz music and its role in worship from 9:30–10:30 a.m. in St. James' Church. Parents, please join us, if you can, for what is sure to be an amazing performance.

Theodicy Jazz Collective is committed to making justice real through the creative, spiritual power of music. The group believes that music has the power to promote peace and justice in society and that the jazz principles of community, flexibility, and listening can help the church thrive in our rapidly changing world. Inspired by jazz, blues, gospel, traditional hymns, and world music, Theodicy has been featured at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine; at Trinity Wall Street; at Canterbury Cathedral; on National Public Radio; at Oberlin Conservatory; at Cambridge, Oxford, and Yale Universities; and in communities across England and the United States from Massachusetts to Mississippi, Los Angeles to London.

Tired of the “traditional vs. contemporary” liturgy debate that so often distracts us from authentic, communal worship, Theodicy seeks to offer a new approach. Far from abandoning tradition, Theodicy expands the poetry of the Church by combining jazz rhythms and harmonies with the rich liturgies found in the Book of Common Prayer, the oral tradition of spirituals, and established hymnody. Bringing voices from the margins of society into the center of tradition and liturgy, Theodicy’s services, workshops, concerts, and conferences explore the theological questions of the twenty-first century with a commitment to musical and academic excellence, responsiveness to the Spirit, and a love of tradition and the liturgical canon.

It's Juice Box Time!

from Rob Krueger, Fifth Grade Teacher and Service Learning Coordinator

Our friends at the St. James' Food Pantry are asking for juice boxes, which are distributed as part of "quick packages" that are given out each Thursday to the homeless in our community. We are hoping to collect a large amount that can be frozen, stored, and then distributed over the next several months.

Please bring in your juice box donations by Friday, March 5. We will celebrate your gifts at All-School Chapel on Thursday, March 12.

You can drop off your donation in the red bin at the gate or in your classroom.
