Annual Fall Book Fair!
by Christina Olague, Library Media Center Specialist
Our annual Book Fair is arriving soon! Mrs. Nelson’s Book Fair Company will again provide a stunning selection of quality hardcover and softcover books, including picture books, fiction, non-fiction, reference books, biographies, poetry, new titles, award winning books, and holiday books – something for everyone!
The Book Fair will be held in St. James’ Hall from Monday morning, September 15, until Friday afternoon, September 19. Classes will preview books on Monday. After school on Monday, from 3:00–4:30 p.m., students in third through sixth grade (and younger students, if accompanied by an adult) may begin purchasing books. The Book Fair will be open before school on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00–8:30 a.m., during recess and lunch, and after school Monday through Thursday until 4:30. The Book Fair will close at the end of lunch recess on Friday at 1:30.
Please join us during your child’s scheduled class buying time (check the schedule!) or before or after school. If you are unable to accompany your child, please send a check made out to Mrs. Nelson’s Book Fair Company with your child or set up a charge limit and provide your Visa, MasterCard, or Discover Card number on the charge authorization form. If you choose to send your K–2 child with cash, please put it in a sealed envelope labeled with the child’s full name and have your child give it directly to the classroom teacher. The Book Fair volunteers cannot be responsible for lost money.
This year we will again feature a Wish List table. Teachers will have an opportunity to preview the book fair and make a list of the books they would like to have in their classroom library. Parents can purchase a book and present it to the teacher or the class. The Wish List table will be located on the left as you enter the Book Fair.
Thank you in advance for your support. The Library Media Center receives 20% of the sales from the Book Fair, which go directly to fund author visits. With your help, we can continue to delight and challenge our students with exciting new books and events that will encourage them to become lifelong readers.
We still need volunteers, too...
Volunteers assist the children in selecting books and making payment, as well as with setting up and breaking down the event. Read more and sign up online »

Band and Handbell Choir Conflict Resolved!
from Jim Casey, Music Teacher
Mr. Casey and Mr. Pan have adjusted the schedules for the Handbell Choir and the St. James' Band so that students can participate in both ensembles. If sixth grade band members are selected to be in the Handbell Choir, they will be dismissed on Tuesday mornings at 7:50 a.m. to attend the handbell rehearsal in the music room, ending at 8:30 a.m. We hope that this adjustment will encourage band members to continue with the progress they made last year.
There's Still Time to Join the St. James' Band
from Brian Duggan, Fourth Grade Teacher
Band at St. James' is off to a great start with many of our band members having spent several weeks at the Colburn School's Jumpstart intensive. Regular band rehearsals begin on September 16th and continue most Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Band members also have the opportunity to rehearse at Colburn on Saturdays.
Good news! Even if they missed the Jumpstart intensive, all 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders who are still interested in joining band are invited to do so. Participation in the band is free, though students will have to rent or buy an instrument. In May students will have the opportunity to perform in concert. Please contact Mr. Duggan at email@example.com with any questions you may have.

The Rt. Rev.
Welcome to St. James' Church and School!
I am so happy to be a part of the St. James' Family. Bishop Jon Bruno appointed me Bishop in Charge after the end of the last school year, so I have been looking forward to the return of students and parents, teachers and staff, as a new academic year begins. We were off to a wonderful start with our first All-School Chapel this week, and I hope to become more a part of the life of the school as time goes on. By the same token, I invite you all to become more a part of the church, whether for services or for the music program or any of our other activities. I join Mrs. David in saying that all are welcome on both sides of the campus!
Many blessings for this school year,
P.S. – A collection of photographs from our first All-School Chapel is available online.

New School Year...Rise in Head Lice Cases
from Kelly Basham, School Nurse
As children return to the classroom for the beginning of a new school year, their risk of acquiring head lice increases dramatically. The incidence of head lice infestation peaks shortly after school starts, particularly in younger children. Children in these age groups tend to play together and have close, head-to-head contact, facilitating transmission. The good news is that lice can’t fly through the air or leap across the room, they merely crawl. Read more »
