Special Speaker in the Library Media Center Next Week

from Christina Olague, Library Media Center Specialist

The Library Media Center is excited to announce a very special guest speaker. During the week of February 17–23, Ms. Susan Watanabe, a preschool parent, will be speaking to our students about African–American Heritage Month and the images displayed in the library (see the reminder posted below). Originally from Chicago, Susan is a former television writer and social worker. She says that in another life, she would’ve been an investigative reporter. Always fascinated by Los Angeles history, she uncovered some wonderful information about the many African–American luminaries with connections to Mid-City, L.A. She’s excited to share some fun stories with our students during library time this week.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to sit in during their students' scheduled library time to hear the presentation, as well!

Fourth Grade Mission Fair on Tuesday

from Brian Duggan, Fourth Grade Teacher

On Tuesday, the fourth graders will present a Mission Fair in the courtyard from 10:00–10:45 a.m. The fair is the culmination of their study of the California missions, which included a field trip this week. Please join us!

Ash Wednesday All-School Chapel

from the Rev. Aidan Koh, Chaplain

Wednesday, February 18, 8:45 a.m.

Join us for a special service including part of the liturgies of Ash Wednesday. The children, parents, and faculty will be invited to participate in the liturgy of imposition of ashes during the service.

This will remind us of our mortality and encourage us to love one another during our lifetimes.

We will instruct the children in our religion classes and at the service that they can freely choose the optional liturgy of imposition of ashes. If you would prefer that your child not participate in the liturgy, you may instruct her or him to remain seated during this time.

Parents are always welcome to attend the chapel services, which help to develop our students’ spiritual lives. Please consider joining your children at this service. You are also encouraged to sit with your children in the church. Please park your car across the street from the school and wait for your children in the parking lot between the church and the school.

At this service we will be taking an offering of non-perishable goods to be donated to St. James' Food Pantry to help neighbors in need. Please bring your donations to school. Suggested items include canned goods (fruit, vegetables, fish and meat), rice, cereals, peanut butter, dried beans, and macaroni.

We Want Your LEGO!

from Byron Zapata, Community Security Manager

If you've got a bunch of LEGO bricks and sets going unused at home, we'd love to take them off your hands!

The yard staff are in search of LEGO blocks for children to use during recess if they'd prefer to build and create than to play organized sports. Any amount would be greatly appreciated, and with the help of all of our school community, I am sure that we will be able to gather a good-sized collection! Thank you so much for all your help.

On Friday, February 6, lots of families came out to our first ever Family Fun Night at Shakey's Pizza.

On Wednesday, classes celebrated Valentine's Day with parties (and even, in Mrs. Dummett's class, a talent show!)

On Wednesday, the fifth graders also participated in the Third Annual JAMES Awards for Outstanding Writing. (No photos yet; we'll have full coverage next week.)

It's Juice Box Time!

from Rob Krueger, Fifth Grade Teacher and Service Learning Coordinator

Our friends at the St. James' Food Pantry are asking for juice boxes, which are distributed as part of "quick packages" that are given out each Thursday to the homeless in our community. We are hoping to collect a large amount that can be frozen, stored, and then distributed over the next several months.

Please bring in your juice box donations by Friday, March 5. We will celebrate your gifts at All-School Chapel on Thursday, March 12.

You can drop off your donation in the red bin at the gate or in your classroom.
