Ever wished someone had asked you what YOU want in a data tool? Now's your chance!

Do you know anyone on your staff, board, or volunteer roster who sees a value in community data, doesn’t already have strong skills or experience finding it, and might be willing to give us an hour of their time to give input on the design of a new online data tool?

Please email us at communityinfonow@gmail.com to connect us to entry-level or intermediate data users who may be interested in participating in a focus group session this month. Again, these would be folks who have an interest in or need for numbers about Bexar County people, issues, or neighborhoods but who aren't already pros at finding that information.

COVID-19 ZIP Code Data Updated

We've now automated updates to the case, death, and vaccination data in the COVID-19 scatterplot tool for ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA); what you see in the visualization will always be the most recent data published to the City of San Antonio's open data portal at data.sanantonio.gov. (The hospitalization indicator has been removed from the visualization, as we've been unable to secure COVID-19 hospitalization data from local sources since November 2020.)

Built using Shiny R, the interactive scatterplot shows the relationship at the ZCTA (ZIP code) level between an indicator of COVID-19 burden and an indicator of community characteristics, such as population race/ethnicity, chronic disease, or unemployment. Each dot in the scatterplot is a ZIP code. The image above shows the positive correlation at the ZIP code level between COVID-19 case rate and percent of the population that is Hispanic or Latino.

Want some help getting started? View a brief video overview of the tool.

We've also published the scatterplot documentation to GitHub.

Contract opportunities open

Community Information Now (CI:Now) is still accepting responses to two Requests for Proposals (RFPs), one for web development and one for graphic design and communications, as we build a new online data platform to provide the public with data on health and social determinants of health. CI:Now is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit local data intermediary housed in and staffed through the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health in San Antonio. Working with a variety of public and nonprofit partner organizations, CI:Now turns local data into information Texas communities can use for planning, trending community change over time, understanding relationships among community issues, and measuring results.

PROPOSALS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL 7 P.M. CST ON JANUARY 25, 2022

Open RFPs are posted at https://cinow.info/rfps/. Minority and women-owned businesses are strongly encouraged to submit proposals. Bexar County-based firms are strongly preferred.

Web Development

Community Information Now (CI:Now) is requesting proposals for web development services to create and deploy a public facing online data platform that incorporates interactive mapping, charts, reports and data downloads that enable flexible query of data disaggregated by place (census tract, neighborhood, ZCTA) and demographics including race/ethnicity. The platform will incorporate a user-centered design based on input from potential users in Bexar County, TX. The design will include two “front doors” to different versions of the site, one for entry-level users and a second for advanced data users. Web development will also incorporate styling and site design layout from a graphic designer. Applicants for this RFP with graphic design experience are encouraged to also apply for the project graphic design RFP. Learn more about the project here.

Graphic Design & Communications

Community Information Now (CI:Now) is requesting proposals for graphic design, communication services and branding to create the look-and-feel of a public facing online data platform that incorporates interactive mapping, charts, reports and data downloads that enable flexible query of data disaggregated by place (census tract, neighborhood, ZCTA) and demographics including race/ethnicity. The graphic design will incorporate potential local user input from a user-centered design process conducted by CI:Now. The design will include two “front doors” to different versions of the site, one for entry-level users and a second for advanced data users. The entry-level version will be replicated in Spanish. Designer will provide HTML/CSS layouts to the project web developer to incorporate into the online platform environment. Applicants for this RFP with web development capacity are encouraged to also apply for the project web development RFP . Learn more about the project here. All design, communication, and branding elements will also be applied to associated templates, training, and promotional materials.
