Volume 13, Number 3 - Summer 2014

Can you believe it's the middle of the summer already?

Summer often is the perfect time to reflect and reconnect with friends and family. After a busy, jam packed spring for business and social activities, I was looking forward to recharge my emotional and intellectual batteries, meeting good friends and catching up on my reading list.

I also wanted to take some time to reflect on the road I've traveled since starting my coaching practice as this summer marks the 16th anniversary of L’Epée Coaching & Consulting. It is hard to believe how fast time has flown.

During the past sixteen years, I have had the great privilege of working with smart and talented professionals from over 45 countries from three continents: America, Europe and Asia. This diversity not only provides a unique environment in which to understand cultural differences, but also gives Coaching4Sucess participants the opportunity to recognize their “cultural intelligence” and apply different approaches in their personal and professional lives.

While I continue to be actively involved in both executive and management coaching, over the past 16 years, I have, at the request of many, broadened my Coaching4Success training programs which aimed at helping my clients improve their overall leadership skills and chances for results and success.

In the corporate training aspect of my work, I will continue to deliver interactive and flexible customized programs that identify the specific demands of organizations and build on the knowledge and experience of their members.
I’m looking forward to the rest of 2014. Like many of you, I am taking holidays during August before returning in the fall with a broad range of new activities. Though there aren’t any official functions slated for the summer, I do intend to be in and around Prague, albeit less often than usual, so please stay in touch.

Wishing you a very sunny & happy summer,
Karin Genton L'Epée

August tends to be a slow month, so how productive you are planning to be in the coming month. What do you usually focus on during August? Take a moment to share your thoughts here:

The Power Breakfast Series will resume in September

For 10 years, L’Epée Coaching & Consulting hosted Power Lunch. The series offered executives and managers the opportunity to learn, share ideas and experiences. Since 2003 many participants have moved on to senior positions and greater responsibilities. Power Lunch was about exploring a diverse range of management and business-related issues.

The 2014 new Power Breakfast series took a more personal approach by providing a forum that encouraged participants to improve self-knowledge and increase self-empowerment.

The upcoming Fall 2014 series entitled “Winning from Within” is based on Erica Ariel Fox book ( and will continue to offer participants the opportunity for self-reflection.

In her fascinating study, Erica looks at people’s performance gap meaning the disparity between what we know we should say and do to be successful and what we actually do.

During each breakfast, participants will enjoy a stimulating discussion with peers and professionals, and will gain insights into the topic guided by Karin Genton-L’Epée.

Want to Enjoy the Summer, Work Smarter, not Harder

“Work hard and you will succeed”. With that maxim in mind, many of us spend long hours in the office struggling to get ahead in our careers. But is working harder the only way to get the results we want?  What if instead of working harder we start working smarter and were even able to achieve better results with less effort?

Working smarter means being clear about our goals and what we set out to achieve. It also requires that we spend more time planning and thinking ahead rather than just diving headfirst into every new project.

Here are a few tips that may help you learn to work smarter rather than harder.

#1    Distinguish the times when you are productive from the times when you are just busy

We are most productive when we spend time building our careers or businesses. For example, time spent meeting clients or calling new prospects often leads to results that we can see and appreciate. In contrast, busying ourselves with low-value activities such as answering e-mail or sitting in long unproductive meetings can often be counter-productive or even just a waste of time.

Though e-mail may give you a feeling of productivity, if you really think about it, how often does time spent writing and answering e-mail boost your bottom line?
Therefore, it is vital that you identify those activities that really do add to your productivity and devote the majority of your time to them.

#2    Think and make choices

Spending most of your time on activities that produce these tangible results forces you to reexamine the tasks you select as your top priorities. As difficult as it is, you need to realize that there is a limit to how much you can accomplish during the course of a day. Making the distinction between important tasks and those that can be put off until tomorrow is key to staying productive and maximizing your time.

#3    Learn to say “No”

The sad truth is that most people are afraid to say no to colleagues or clients for fear of appearing lazy, unreliable or even rude. However, because you want to maximize your productivity, it is often better to say no at the outset, rather than saying yes to everything and then finding yourselves unable to deliver quality work because of a lack of time or energy.

Learn to say no now and you’ll have more time later to devote to those activities that have the biggest impact on your career or business.

It is vital that you identify those activities that really do add to your productivity and devote the majority of your time and energy to them. Most people achieve 80% of their results from just 20% of their time. Knowing this and concentrating on those tasks that lead you to the greatest results is fundamental to making the most of your time and energy.

This summer are you working harder or smarter?
