Greetings from Intervoice - June 2011

We are delighted to bring you news from around the world from the Hearing Voices networks and friends.  There is a lot happening in the coming months as you will see below.  I particularly mention the World Hearing Voices Congress in September which will be held in the beautiful surroundings of Savona, Italy.  It has an exciting programme and there will be opportunities to meet old friends and new.  It should be a great occasion and I hope to see you there!

Intervoice's third international congress will be held in the lovely surroundings of Savona Italy.  The programme focuses on paths to recovery and includes presentations and workshops. The conference languages will be Italian and English,  The congress will be preceded by:

This is an opportunity for you to contribute to the development of Intervoice: there will be a day of presentations from networks around the world and from the Intervoice Board.  There will be an interactive forum for participants to share ideas. Early booking is recommended! This event will be in English only.

Savona, Italy - June 24th "Hearing Voices:  a common human experience"
A seminar with Marcello Macario, Sandra Escher, Marius Romme, Ron Coleman, Giuseppe Tibaldi, Lia Glovers, Jacqui Dillon & Dirk Corstens.  More information (in Italian): 

London, England - June 28th - "Understanding & working with paranoia & hearing voices"
A workshop by the National Paranoia network.  Topics will include:  the three stages of paranoia and hearing voices; deconstructing voices; working with unusual beliefs, coping strategies, case study and personal experience. 

Two events for World Hearing Voices Day (September 14th)

Manchester, England - September 14th & 15th - "Asylum Conference 2011"
A meeting to discuss alternatives to pathological labels of mental illness - for anyone involved in the mental health system - be part of a critical discussion about what steps we can take to oppose oppression of those labelled by psychiatry. 

Newport, Wales - September 14th - a celebration
Visions and Voices Newport are looking for help to set up a day of celebration on World Hearing Voices Day

Hearing Voices Network Finland: held a meeting in Helsinki on 27th April.  Anniko Salo presented research findings into the needs of families with a hearing voice member. The day included presentations by Aleksi Airola, a voice hearer, Riika Ranta, from the Finnish National Family Association (partners in the research project) and Paul Baker who presented information on Intervoice and the worldwide heaing voice movement.

News from the French Network:  on 19th May, a Congress was held in Nancy on "Innovations in Psychiatry" with John Jenkins, Sonia Johnson and Yann Derobert.  This was the first official appearance of the network and probably the first psychiatric congress in France where a voice hearer was on stage!

Auckland, New Zealand - On June 1st & 3rd Ron Coleman ran two one day workshops on "Advanced working with voices"

Award for Sandra Escher:  in Amsterdam in April, Sandra was awarded an Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau.  It is a high ranking award, equivalent to a knighthood - a wonderful recognition of Sandra's work and excellent for the voice hearing movement.

Research Opportunity - UK

Full-time, fully funded PhD research opportunity in Voice Hearing Research at  Birmingham University in England.  The Faculty of Health has a long-standing interest and a successful track record of research in this area. We are seeking suitable candidates to work with Professor Mervyn Morris and his collaborative team, Professor Marius Romme and Dr. Sandra Escher, in an exciting opportunity to continue ground-breaking studies.
