An Incredible Start to Divestment Campaigns in 2014

In addition to SJP at UCLA's divestment campaign, there have been a number of other amazing and successful efforts to stop student tuition from supporting occupation and war crimes against Palestinians.

Earlier this year, we saw an incredible campaign at UC Riverside gather the support of 75 student organizations. Divestment fell one vote shy of passage, but the momentum for Palestinian rights on campus has never been stronger.
SJP at UCLA held an amazing divestment campaign in which 20 campus groups and hundreds of students and alumni endorsed divestment and spoke out eloquently in support of the resolution. Similarly, the vote failed by a margin of one, but is now hailed as a turning point for the question of Palestine at UCLA.

After UCLA's attempt, we saw Loyola University become the first Jesuit University in the nation to vote for divestment, this time unanimously. The week after the vote saw intense pressure from anti-divestment groups and off campus organizations opposed to Palestinian rights. These intimidation tactics forced a revote, which again passed by a majority. Even though the student body president subsequently vetoed the bill, SJP and allies collected 1,000 signatures and eventually won a total of 3 majority votes for divestment.

Shortly after, Students Allied for Freedom and Equality at the University of Michigan brought forth a divestment resolution. After the student government refused to debate it, students occupied the campus student center for one entire week, forcing a debate and vote. Although this vote didn't pass, the campaign generated amazing solidarity, and wonderful solidarity from across campus and even the campus paper's editorial board.

After Michigan's campaign, students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn successfully passed a divestment resolution that will produce an investigation of the campus' investments in violations of Palestinian rights and begin divestment proceedings.
In Canada, Windsor University in Ontario passed a divestment referendum, McMaster University passes a student vote for divestment, and Ryerson University launched its own campaign.

Now, DePaul University in Chicago and the University of New Mexico have opened their own divestment campaigns, continuing the momentum and helping to bring attention to the role so many university's play in furthering the occupation through investments in companies that support Israel's occupation policies.

We are so excited to see more campaigns blossom throughout the year!

Jewish Voice for Peace at UCLA

Are you a Jewish ally in the fight for Palestinian human rights? Then come check out the new student group, Jewish Voice for Peace at UCLA. Our first meeting is this Thursday April 3 at 4:00pm in the Coffee Bean at Hillel.

We are students inspired by Jewish tradition, working in solidarity with SJP for Palestinian human rights. JVP at UCLA focuses our efforts on boycott and divestment campaigns that directly target Israel's occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and its blockade of the Gaza Strip. JVP at UCLA seeks to educate students about ongoing human rights violations, provide opportunities for unified action, and explore Jewish identity with regards to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

UAW 2865 at UCLA on Strike!

Teaching assistants, readers, and tutors here at UCLA will be going on an all-day strike on Thursday, April 3rd, joined by all UC campuses across the state, to challenge a number of unfair labor practices committed by UC management during the course of its negotiations with our union. These unfair labor practices include refusing to bargain over class size and the 18-quarter rule, and unlawful intimidation of student workers on multiple UC campuses.

We are calling for an all-day work stoppage on April 3rd. This means withholding all labor related to your position as a TA, reader, or tutor. Instead, join us, and other members of the university community on the picket lines and at campus actions.

Please follow this Facebook page for more information on our picket lines and how to get involved.

Together we must stand against UC's mistreatment of its workers by exercising our legal right to strike and challenge these unfair labor practices.
