Conference Updates

Airports Council International - North America (ACI-NA) 2015 Annual Conference
October 4 - 7, Long Beach, CA

SBA regularly attends this important industry conference, which this year was held in Long Beach, California from October 4 to 7 and featured keynote speakers Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst of NPD Group, Inc. and nationally recognized expert on consumer behavior, and Dr. Travis Bradberry, award-winning author of the Emotional Intelligence books. Representing our firm was Steve Baldwin, President/CEO, who took in lectures, keynotes, sessions, and the exhibition hall while connecting with current and prospective clients. As a long-time member of ACI-NA, SBA finds the relaxed and professional atmosphere of the conference conducive for cultivating new and existing relationships.

The 63rd Annual Conference of the Michigan Association of Airport Executives
September 14 - 18, Thompsonville, MI

As part of our increased presence in the state of Michigan, SBA attended the 63rd Annual conference of the Michigan Association of Airport Executives (MAAE) which was held at the Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, Michigan from September 14 - 18. This was the first time SBA attended the conference, and we were represented by President/CEO Steve Baldwin and Associate Spencer Gillette from Michigan. At the conference, we were able to connect with other Michigan airports as well as our current client the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Overall, as a new member of the MAAE, we were able to capitalize on an excellent opportunity to meet leaders in aviation from throughout Michigan, and our prospects of growing within the state are promising.

AAAE Great Lakes Chapter Conference
August 6 - 9, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Governance Transfer Presentation

In August, SBA teamed up with our client the Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) to present on governance transference at the AAAE’s Great Lakes Chapter “Building Connections” conference, held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from August 6 - 9, 2015. Presenting at the conference were Brian Ryks, Executive Director of GRR, and Steve Baldwin, President/CEO of SBA. Brian and Steve presented "Creating an Airport Authority" which detailed the complexities of moving from city/county/state operators to regional airport authority operators, as well as the in-depth FAA requirements and application process needed to obtain successful approval for such a governance transfer.

We are delighted that the Great Lakes Chapter asked us to present at the conference, and we are excited about sharing our expertise in this area with the industry.

  • If your organization is considering a change in governance model, please contact us at for an initial consultation regarding the process and complexities, and we would be happy to address your situation. Our firm has developed streamlined processes that have met with success at every level at the FAA as well as at the local level for our clients.

Governance Transfer and HR Support

In addition to our overall work in governance transfer for the Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR), we have also been supplying additional staff support services. Our Senior Associate Doug Hamlin has been overseeing these activities, including managing the hiring of the Authority's first Human Resources manager to transition employees from the County to the new Authority. Doug is currently managing a comparative analysis of salaries as part of the employee transition.

  • We would also like to offer our congratulations to Jaxyn Ryks, the son of GRR Executive Director Brian Ryks, who attends the West Michigan Aviation Academy (WMAA) which is located at the Airport. Jaxyn was a featured speaker at an October 1st event which celebrated a $150,000 grant from the Delta Air Lines Foundation to the Academy to purchase a Cessna 172 to help train the school's students to be future pilots. For further details on the Academy and the donation as well as a short video (also embedded below), please see this article from Delta
