Sizzling Summer: August 2013

The Summer of 2013 has been setting dozens of records for heat...so much so that on June 29th operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor were paused because of the extreme heat of 119 degrees Fahrenheit, which caused concern over safety issues.

For Steve Baldwin Associates, it's been about generating light, not heat. We've taken on several new clients, as well as new projects for current clients, and have also added new staff members to our growing practice.

New Clients

In addition to Syracuse-Hancock International Airport and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport announced earlier this year, we would also like to welcome Dutchess County Airport near Poughkeepsie, NY and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) in Buffalo, NY to the SBA client roster.

We are very pleased to be of service to our new clients; below is additional information about our work with them.

Dutchess County and Dutchess County Airport

Dutchess County has retained SBA to perform a comprehensive operational and financial assessment of the Dutchess County Airport. The project includes a top-down review of several aspects, including: airport operations, FBO performance, and financial and management review. The work is being performed to help the County to best position the airport as both a transportation and economic development resource for the communities it serves. The project is scheduled for completion in October.

For this assignment, SBA has been retained by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) to assist it with the decision-making process regarding the development of a Request for Proposals, and review of business terms, for Fixed Base Operator services at the Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG). The first phase of the project has been completed. An RFP for FBO services has been issued, and the responses were due by August 9, 2013.

Updates: Current Clients

As we expand our client base, we also continue to perform additional services for our current clients. In this enewsletter, we are highlighting Syracuse-Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, New York.
  • For Syracuse-Hancock International Airport, we continue to serve as the consultants-of-record and strategists for the transfer of airport operations from the City of Syracuse to the newly-created Syracuse Regional Airport Authority. SBA is leading all efforts of the transfer pertaining to regional coordination of involved parties, as well as the transfer of the airport's FAR Part 139 airport operating certification from the City to the Authority. This includes all FAA coordination, the transfer of all grant assurances, the sponsor's financial obligations, and the transfer of the airport's Enterprise Fund. The full application to transfer is scheduled to be submitted to the FAA this month, with January 1, 2014 as the target date for the Authority to assume operations for the airport.
We are happy to provide industry-leading services in aviation consulting and strategic planning to all of our clients. We thank each of our clients for the opportunity to work together.

Updates: New Staff

SBA would like to welcome Andrew Serota as our newest, full-time Associate. Andrew first came to SBA from the NYAMA and City of Syracuse Internship Program (see sidebar) and was quickly promoted to full-time Associate. With a J.D. from Syracuse University's College of Law and experience with the FAA's busiest legal enforcement office, as well as growing expertise in vetting leases and concession agreements, Andrew's legal insights are a valued addition to SBA's toolkit. For more information about Andrew, please view his bio on our website. Andrew can be reached at aserota@baldwinllc.com.

SBA would also like to welcome Penny Perkins to the team, who is providing her services as a writer, editor, and graphic designer to all client communications and client work products. Penny has more than two decades experience as a communications professional and as a teacher of writing and communications at several local institutions of higher education. More information regarding Penny's professional background can be viewed on our website. Penny can be reached at pperkins@baldwinllc.com.

We welcome both Andrew and Penny to the SBA team.

As we continue to be successful in growing our practice dedicated solely to airports, we would very much like to thank you for your continuing business and your trust in us.

As summer ends and the busy fall season begins, please keep our services in mind—if we can be of any additional assistance to your airport, don't hesitate to contact us.

NYAMA Updates

CEO Forum:
SBA Founder and Principal, Steve Baldwin, was recently invited to moderate the "CEO Peer Review Forum" during NYAMA's June Board meeting in Syracuse. With an audience limited to airport directors and airport upper-management from across New York State, Steve used his industry experience to moderate discussions ranging from best practices for airport budgeting and revenue development, to managing first-response needs at airports. SBA is often called upon to serve in these types of professional leadership and development events.

2013 Annual Conference:
The New York Aviation Management Association will host its annual fall conference and exhibition show in Albany this coming September 18-20th at The Desmond Hotel and Conference Center. For more info, visit NYAMA's conference webpage. Two of the central topics being highlighted at the conference include "airport disaster planning" and "the state of State Aviation Associations." We will be in attendance, and look forward to seeing our New York clients there.

Internship Program:
As a member of NYAMA, SBA is proud to participate in numerous association activities, as well as do our share to promote professionalism in the state's aviation industry. Given that, we recently took on Andrew Serota as a legal intern through NYAMA's Internship Program. Andrew performed so well during his internship that we have recently promoted him to a full-time Associate. We invite you to read more about him in the "Staff" section of this enewsletter and on our website

ACI-NA Conference

2013 Annual Conference:
In addition to the NYAMA Conference, SBA will attend the annual conference of the Airport Council International—North America (ACI-NA). This year's conference will be held from September 22-25th in San Jose, California, the hub of Silicon Valley. For agenda highlights, see the conference's "Schedule at a Glance." Again, we look forward to seeing you there, and please let us know if you'll be in attendance.
