International: Bem-vindos ao Canada ! - For decades lay people and pastors from Brazil have been part of Lutheran Church–Canada. They have participated in church life at the congregational and synodical levels. In fact, several pastors from the Igreja Evangélica Luterana do Brasil (IELB) have served in Canada. In the past three years the number of Brazilian Lutherans coming to Canada has accelerated.

In Montreal, for example, there have usually been 1 or 2 Brazilian students at a time attending de l'Ascension, Montréal since the 1990's. Three yeas ago, in addition to single students, young families started coming and participating in congregational life as well. Though some return to Brazil after their studies, many are staying in Quebec (4 families to date). They are a welcome and appreciated part of the diverse membership in Quebec's Lutheran churches, and are only part of the increasing Brazilan Lutheran immigration that has joined LCC.

Repent and Believe

“In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ ” - Matthew 3:1-2

John prepared the way for Jesus by preaching repentance. Then, when Jesus’ ministry was complete and He was raised from the dead, He sent out His disciples to preach “repentance and the forgiveness of sins.” Our position today is the same as it was in John’s day. We never outgrow the need for repentance – examining our lives, turning away from our sins, and turning toward Jesus in faith to receive His forgiveness and strength for a renewed life of godliness.
Like John, our church prepares the way for people to receive forgiveness and the life-giving body and blood of Christ. Each week, all across our synod and around the world in locations Lutheran Church-Canada operates, pastors deliver Word and Sacrament ministry. This life-giving message may seem out of vogue in our post-modern world, but we know how important it is and how necessary it is to deliver.

Supporting your church through charitable gifts ensures this message continues to be shared. To learn how you can develop a charitable gift either in life or in death, please speak with a Foundation representative or visit our website at

Isaiah 9:1–4
1 Corinthians 1:10–18
Matthew 4:12–25

The Lord Manifests His Glory through His Office of the Holy Ministry

By His coming in the flesh and by His preaching and miracles, the Lord Jesus shines the light of His Gospel upon the people who walked in darkness and who dwelt in a land of deep darkness (Is. 9:2). He also has multiplied the nation and increased its joy (Is. 9:3) by calling disciples to Himself from the ends of the earth. For this purpose, He calls Peter and Andrew, with James and John, to follow Him and be fishers of men (Matt. 4:19). As Jesus did, they also go forth proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people (Matt. 4:23). They preach the foolishness of the cross of Christ as the very power and wisdom of God. This word and preaching of the cross divides those who are perishing from us who are being saved (1 Cor. 1:18), but it unites the Church, the one Body of Christ, in the same mind and the same judgment (1 Cor. 1:10).
