Congratulations to our Fall 2015 Domestic Violence Training Graduates!
Our Fall 40 Hour Advocate training has come to an end! We received over 150 volunteer applications and held about 10 group interviews before the training began! Our collaborative training with the Riley Center welcomed over 30 trainees who will go on to volunteer at either W.O.M.A.N., Inc or Riley Center.
Thanks to our community partners, we had over eight different agencies participate in the training through either presenting or attending. I especially appreciate this group for dedicating several Saturdays and sticking it out through the late night evening sessions. This was a great group and I'm so happy I got the chance to meet everyone! They kept the conversations and questions going during each training day. I'm very excited for our new group to begin volunteering at our agency!

Congratulations to our newest advocates! Alice G, Carolina, Alice Y. Rosa, Ignacia, Jen, Miriam, Eileen, Ana, Leila, Jae, Bekah, Astrea and Juliette-Marie!
Dog Gone Good Time at the Bow Wow Bonanza
After organizing and settling on a location change, we were SO excited to be able to host our 3rd Annual Doggie Meet Up at the beautiful Lake Merritt Amphitheater!

On Sunday, October 18th community members and their playful pups joined us at our fundraiser benefiting W.O.M.A.N., Inc. There, the puparazzi captured awesome photos of our attendees participating in several activities including the 2016 W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Pet Calendar Photo shoot and the Mutt Strut, our doggie fashion show where our animal friends got to show off their outfits & ‘pawsome’ personalities. Winners and participants won some great, generously donated prizes courtesy of George, Humphrey Slocombe, Momo’s Restaurant and Pawtrero. All in all, this year’s Doggie Meet Up fundraising garnered $650 for our Pet Fund for Survivors!

Thanks to all who came to show their support and to the volunteers who made this event possible! Special thanks to Aleah Fajardo for her awesome photography skills & all puparazzi who shared their adorable photos of the event with us! You can check out photos from the event on our Facebook.
W.O.M.A.N., Inc Presents at Blue Shield
W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Executive Director, Jill Zawisza, was proud to present to approximately 70 Blue Shield employees on August 20th. Along with the Director of Blue Shield Against Violence, Marissa Tirona, Jill introduced W.O.M.A.N., Inc.’s work and strategic goals to the group.
W.O.M.A.N., Inc. supports those impacted by violence using an innovative approach to services and programs that build stronger, safer communities. Please make a donation today and join our community of supporters who impact changes in the lives of survivors of all communities.

The Fog building at 333 Valencia st., where W.O.M.A.N., Inc.’s office is located, is currently under construction and will continue to be through the Fall and Winter 2016.  We wanted you to know that our operations will still continue and will be slightly adjusted due to the times when the noise level is high.
Effective October 5, our new temporary drop-in support hours will be as follows:
Wednesdays: 2p-3:30p (therapy consults and drop-in support in English/Spanish)
Fridays: 2p-3:30p (drop-in support in English/Spanish)
Know that the front of the building looks as though it is completely boarded up but the front door is still accessible.  Unfortunately, though, the elevator is unreliable as it’s not always working but we will try to be as accommodating as much as we can.

We apologize for any inconvenience! Thank you for understanding!

Also covered was foundational domestic violence education on the cycle of violence, different types of abuse, and perhaps most importantly, what roles we can play in ending violence. You too can get involved by supporting local anti-domestic violence organizations through volunteer work or donations, by offering supportive and validating messages to survivors of domestic violence, or questioning someone you know is using abuse against their partner. We ALL have a role to play in calling attention to domestic violence and the corrosive impact it has on families, our community and our workplaces.

Thank you Blue Shield for welcoming us into your company to talk about our work, and for raising awareness about domestic violence! We are thrilled to be developing this relationship; because of your support we raised over $7,300 as a result of this shared campaign!

Get YOUR Pet in our 2016 Pet Calendar!
Last year, we put together our first ever W.O.M.A.N., Inc. pet calendar and it turned out to be a great success! We completely sold out and we're hoping we can make this year just as great. Not only was last year’s calendar overflowing with cuteness, it was also full of bravely shared stories of how pets have helped people survive hardships and heal from them. In line with the sentiment behind the Doggie Meet Up, the calendar seeks to not only highlight the correlation between domestic violence & pet abuse, but also that pets make wonderful, healing companions for domestic violence survivors. In addition to valuing the love and support pets provide survivors, want to celebrate the enormous positive impact that animals can have on all of our lives.
"I'm a domestic violence survivor. I've been though hell and back multiple times but Dakine, my Alaskan Malamute has stood by me every step of the way. She was my shoulder to cry on and always seemed to understand. Without her I don't think I would have made the tough transition to freedom. She truly is my best friend." - Tiffany, 2015 W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Pet Calendar
"Athena and her sister Owl keep this Domestic Violence Advocate goin'! They are both rescue pets, and their resilience and biggest of hearts bring so much joy to my life, I am so very grateful." - Jenny, 2015 W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Pet Calendar

You will also have an opportunity to be photographed at the Bow Wow Bonanza & are welcome to submit your story before, during or after the event. Healthy Mother's Workplace Award
Last month, we were honored to receive the Silver Award for Excellence in Maternal Health and Equity at the Healthy Mother’s Workplace Coalition Ceremony.
The Healthy Mother’s Workplace Coalition was developed by various community partners to “recognize San Francisco employers with policies that support the well being of their workers.” Their excellence awards honor establishments that promote health and equity of working parents by adopting fair policies regarding parental leave, lactation accommodation and work-family balance. If a teeny tiny organization like W.O.M.A.N., Inc. can honor working mothers, providing flexible work days, a private room for them to pump (if and when it’s needed) and give paid time off for parental bonding, I think all our organizations and businesses can! Thanks for the recognition, Healthy Mother’s Coalition!
2015 Great NonProfit
Every year, we strive to build our positive reviews on GreatNonprofits. GreatNonprofits--a review site like TripAdvisor--annually honors highly reviewed non-profits with their Top-Rated List. We are so happy to announce that we were listed as a 2015 TopRated Nonprofit! This can make a huge difference in our fundraising and volunteer retention. Thank you so much for your sharing your thoughts and earning us this title for the 3rd year in a row!
New Support Group for Friends & Family of Domestic Violence Survivors
Thank You for Supporting Us in the 2015 Purple Purse Challenge
We were honored to be one of ~160 organizations selected to be apart of Allstate’s 2015 Purple Purse challenge! The Allstate Purple Purse Challenge aims to speak out against financial abuse and to promote economic empowerment. In honor of domestic violence awareness month, the Allstate foundation hosts this fundraising challenge annually to help increase visibility, awareness and funds for agencies who work directly with domestic violence survivors. With the help of our fabulous fundraisers and community supporters like yourself, we were able to raise more than $5,700! In addition to that, your support helped us achieve our fundraising goals during the weekly bonus challenges which will be bringing W.O.M.A.N., Inc $2,750 from the Allstate Foundation. Many thanks to all those who fund raised for us, who donated and those who helped to spread the word. These funds will help us sustain our programs so that we can better support all those impacted by domestic violence. You have made this fundraising effort a great success, and our organization could not thrive as it does without you!
