The books will be in marked bins in the East Foyer the next several Sundays. Please stop by after worship to take a look. Each book costs $1 which can be placed in the lock box on the office door. Collected funds will serve as a donation to the church's general fund.

Accompanist Transition

Our accompanist and pianist, Nancy Vogelman, has resigned her position at UUCR. This Sunday, November 10, will be her last Sunday accompanying the choir and playing for services. We know the entire congregation joins us in heartfelt appreciation of Nancy's years of service to our church, and we wish her the very best in her future endeavors.
An interim pianist has been secured; Diane Carsten-Pelak holds a BA in music and religion form Kalamazoo College and a MM in piano performance from Western Michigan University. She is the accompanist for The Arlington Community Chorus and accompanies all choral ensembles at The Potomac School.  She frequently plays throughout the DC area for church choirs, school choirs and as recital accompanist. Diane will be playing for us through the end of December.

Special Congregational Meeting: This Sunday, November 10

Special Congregational Meeting
Sunday, November 10, 11:30am - 12:30pm

We are holding a special Congregational Meeting this Sunday, November 10 after church service.

The purpose of the meeting is for the membership to approve two items:

  • Vision Statement for 2024. Members will be asked to approve a new Vision Statement for where we want to be in 2024. The Vision Statement will be used by the Strategic Planning Committee to develop the three-year plan, committees to develop their annual plans and the Finance Committee for developing the budget.
Recommended Vision Statement: UUCR is our 21st Century beloved spiritual home, advancing equity and justice in our congregation and our community.
  • Extend Pilot Governance Test Until June 2021.  As we continue to implement the pilot, events continue to provide good case studies illustrating that the pilot needs to evolve more and allow us to have more time prior to making a final decision and changing the Constitution. The membership will be asked for approval to extend the pilot for one more church year.

Please put this meeting on your calendar and plan to attend. We must have a quorum of 45 members present for the vote to take place. Childcare will be provided; click here to sign up for childcare by Friday, November 8.

Seeing White, Discussions About Race: This Sunday, November 10

Seeing White: Discussions About Race
Sunday, November 10, following the Special Congregation Meeting (estimated 12:00 - 1:30pm)

Join us to take a critical look at the concept of whiteness: how it functions in the life of our society and affects us all. This is one session of a series that runs through November 17. These discussions will center on the “Seeing White” podcast produced by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, which turns things around by discussing the notion of “whiteness” itself.

Learn more and view course information on our website calendar. Contact Helen Rose ( for a link to the specific podcast that will be discussed this Sunday.

No registration necessary - come to one or come to all.

Let's Talk About Death Over Dinner: November 16

Let's Talk About Death Over Dinner
Saturday, November 16, 5:30 - 8:30pm

Join UUCR members and friends for a potluck dinner and thoughtful conversation about death, facilitated by our Community Minister, Rev. Julie Price, who serves as a Hospice Chaplain.

We’ll begin by raising a glass to someone who is no longer with us. Then with prompts such as, “If you only had 30 days to live, how would you spend them?” diners will be given permission to talk about a subject our culture generally considers taboo dinner conversation. Three short resources to read, watch, and listen to will be sent out as “homework” ahead of our dinner. Participants will bring a dish to share. Check out this video to learn more about Death Over Dinner Project.

Click here to register on our website calendar by Monday, November 11. Contact Rev. Julie Price with questions (

Guest at Your Table - An Opportunity to Support Human Rights

We are excited to have kicked off the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee’s (UUSC) Guest at Your Table (GAYT) initiative this past Sunday. Did you pick up a GAYT box yet?

The GAYT program helps participants of all ages build awareness about social justice and human rights, form lasting connections to UU principles, and develop a sense of their own power to affect change. This program also increases the impact of the UUSC, which empowers individuals and groups around the world.

This year’s Guest at Your Table theme is Women Leaders, Strong Communities. The "guests” are four women leaders from UUSC partner organizations. Pelenise Alofa, the director of Live & Learn Environmental Education Kiribati, is helping people respond to the climate crisis in the Pacific. Marta Velásquez leads an all-volunteer feminist organization that empowers women and works to end gender-based violence in Honduras. After being imprisoned in Burma (Myanamar) at age eighteen, Wai Wai Nu founded Women Peace Network. Her organization advocates for human rights, conducts leadership trainings, brings together people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds, and makes sure Rohyingya women’s voices are heard. Drawing on her experience of coming to the U.S. as a refugee from Romania when she was five years old, Monica Curca, the founder and director of Activate Labs based in DC, brings art, music, and storytelling to migrants from Central America.

Congregants are invited to support the work of these and other women leaders by picking up a GAYT box in the East Foyer after the service. Take your box home and place it on your dinner table. Each day, you may insert spare change into the box and share the inspirational stories of hope about this year’s “guests” who are changing lives and who can do even more with your help.

Boxes and pamphlets with additional information about GAYT will be available in the East Foyer through November 17.  Boxes should be returned to UUCR by Sunday, December 15. All donations will be pooled, and a combined donation will be made to UUSC.

Thank you for participating in this important program. Your generosity will make a real difference for people who are facing severe climate impacts, violence against women, and the trauma of fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries.

Library Clean Up

If you've been in the church Library recently, you may have noticed that it seems more spacious and organized. This is due to the hard work of Beth DiPasquale, Linda Weaver and Barbara Naef. Many thanks to these three for helping to keep our space attractive and functional!

Holiday Gifts for Kids

Tis the season … to help Cornerstones provide gifts for its young clients.

UUCR is collecting gifts for the Holiday Gifts for Kids program. The Christmas tree in the East Foyer has tags for 35 children with their specific wishes. To participate, pick a tag, sign up on the spreadsheet next to their name and purchase the item(s) on the tag. The expected amount to spend is $60-75, you may share a tag with another individual or family.  If you would like to participate but prefer for us to do the shopping, you can donate by check to this effort. Write a check to UUCR with "Holiday Gifts for Kids" on the memo.

Please bring the labeled, unwrapped gifts to UUCR by December 1. You can bring gifts on Sunday morning or arrange to leave gifts with the Office Director, during office hours. Gift cards can be placed in the lock box on the office door for safe keeping. Checks can be mailed, placed in the lock box or put in the offering basket on Sundays.

Thank you for your generosity and holiday spirit! Your support of this special program will help make a child's wishes come true this holiday season.

Email Scam

A few congregants and staff have received a scam email from someone pretending to be a UUCR staff member emailing from a personal email address. Please note that church staff will only email from their work email addresses, which all end with The UUCR staff will NEVER ask you to send them money, gift cards, or the like.

If you receive a scam email, you may report it to your email provider as a "phishing email" or simply delete it.

Inclement Weather Policy

With the arrival of colder temperatures, we want to share the UUCR Inclement Weather Policy so that our members and friends can be prepared for any weather-related church closings and cancellations.

In keeping with our Inclement Weather Policy, UUCR may cancel services and other activities if the Fairfax County Parks and Recreation Department or Fairfax County Schools close facilities. However, other factors may result in a decision to close or remain open that are independent of these organizations.

Closings will always be noted on our outgoing voice message and posted on our websiteFacebook and Twitter. Please check any of these to see if we are open if you are unclear!
