Sunday, October 6; 11:30am - 12:30pm

So much of our waste goes through a garbage disposal (or the trash and landfill) and into our sewer system, only to end up in lakes and rivers where it harms the environment.  Come learn how to compost and reuse your kitchen and yard/garden waste.  It’s not hard, it’s better for the planet, and it’s the right thing to do!

LGBTQ+ Employment Protection Rally, #OurDayInCourt: October 8

#OurDayInCourt Rally at the Supreme Court
Tuesday, October 8, 8:00am - 12:30pm
Steps of the US Supreme Court, 1 First St NE, Washington, DC 20543

Three individual cases will be heard by the US Supreme Court on October 8 to determine whether or not LGBTQ people are protected from workplace discrimination under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  The Trump administration filed two briefs earlier this year. If the court rules in favor of the Trump administration, the 11.3 million Americans who identify as LGBTQ+ could be vulnerable to being fired on the basis of sexuality and gender identity.

On October 8, join others who support employment protections for LGBTQ+ people as they gather on the steps of the Supreme Court in the nation’s capital. We hope UUCR members and friends will attend this important rally. Many Unitarian Universalists are expected to be present and wearing their easy-to-spot yellow "Standing with Love" t-shirts. (We do still have t-shirts available for purchase, contact Beth ( if you are interested.)

Seeing White, Discussions About Race: Sundays, October 13 - November 17

Seeing White: Discussions About Race
Sundays, October 13 - November 17, 11:30am - 1:00pm
RE Classroom
Come to one or come to all!

The subject of whiteness can be uncomfortable to discuss. Conversations about race often end up focusing on non-white people in a way that assumes whiteness is the norm. These discussions will center on the “Seeing White” podcast produced by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, which turns things around by discussing the notion of “whiteness” itself.

This is not about celebrating whiteness but taking a critical look at the concept: how it functions in the life of our society and affects us all. From the pseudo-science that produced the idea of race to the ways these ideas have played out in the past and continue today. Please listen to the podcast episode in advance for an informative discussion.

Course information is available at Coordinators: Laurie Dodd, Helen Rose and Nonnie Mullin. Drop-ins welcome.

Interest Meeting for Volunteer Opportunity in South Africa: October 23

Interest Meeting for Volunteer Opportunity in South Africa
Wednesday, October 23, 7:00pm

Last spring, Phil Lilienthal spoke at one of our Minister’s Salons about Global Camps Africa. These one-week camps serve children in South Africa whose families have been affected by AIDS. The camps are staffed by South Africans and assisted by adult volunteers from the US.

Rev. Debra is interested in bringing a group of UUCR congregants to assist at the camp from March 21 - March 28, 2020. The cost to participate is $1000 for lodging and food, plus airfare (currently $676 from IAD).  We would need a group of at least five UUCR volunteers to make this happen. Participants will need to make a commitment to going by December 1. You can watch a video about the camp at this link

On October 23, Mr. Lilienthal will join Rev. Debra for a discussion with anyone who might be interested in participating. Email Rev. Debra ( by October 15 if you are interested in attending this October 23 interest meeting. This event will be canceled if we do not have adequate interest or enough responses for the interest meeting.

NEW this year is a catered Italian Dinner before the auction! The dinner is an additional cost of $15/person and kids 12 and under eat free! Please click here to register for the dinner. There are all sorts of volunteer opportunities available. We are looking for a raffle coordinator, volunteer coordinator, and logistics coordinator. We also need other day-of volunteers to make the evening run smoothly.

The Auction Committee is meeting in the Board Room every Monday at 7:00pm until the auction. Please join us and help make this the most successful event yet!

Openings Available in Two New Spirituality Groups

We are forming two new spirituality groups that will meet monthly on Wednesdays, one from 10:00am - 12:00pm and one from 7:00 - 9:00pm. The groups will start meeting on October 16. Openings are available in both groups.

The spirituality groups will be composed of 8 - 12 church members who meet once a month to form deeper personal connections and share stories on topics of life-changing experiences, core values, religious beliefs, and new searches for meaning.  Spirituality groups are an excellent way to explore, grow and share your own spiritual journey with others in a social setting, experience lived UU values and perspectives and make a deeper personal connection with others in the congregation.

For more information and to sign up, contact Rod Paolini ( Groups must have a minimum of six participants to occur.  Please register by October 10 if you'd like to attend. Groups will be cancelled if there are not enough registrations.
