Dear Pilgrims,

Welcome to the Autumn Newsletter 2023. As ever, Pilgrims continue to distinguish themselves on the river & high seas!

The main effort for 2024 will be engagement with parents and King's to ensure we have a successful midweek Henley lunch party.

I hope to see you at the AGM & Westbere row on 23rd September.

With best wishes,

Ben Loxton-Edwards (MR 1990-1995)
Chairman of the Canterbury Pilgrims Boat Club

News From The River
Huge congratulations to Helena Barton (MT 2010-2015) on her momentous win in the Wargrave Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta 2023. Helena raced in the bow seat for Thames A. It was magnificent.

Alex Lapsley (GL2015-2020, James Crawley (GR 2016-2021), Tom Wingfield (MT 2015-2020 and Ian Wingfield (MT 2015-2021) came together a couple of weeks before Henley but did not proceed through the Wyfold qualifiers.

News From High Seas
Bear Cochrane (MR 2018-2023) raced in the British Rowing Beach Sprint Championships. He won a Bronze Medal in the U18 category. For those new to the format, it is quite a challenge with proper waves, slipped seats, caught crabs and a sprint up the beach to a thumping soundtrack.
The Coach
Our new Trustee Vicky Spencer (MT1992-1994) made a successful move from the Australian to British coaching scene. Vicky was Performance Lead for the GB team at the U19 World Rowing Championships in Paris. The team topped the medal table to become GB’s most successful U19 team to date. Vicky has an ongoing role with British Rowing as Olympic Transition Coach U19-U23, overseeing the U19 programme and large cohort of student athletes studying and rowing in the US College system.
Henley 2023
Pilgrims met for lunch on the Wednesday & Saturday.
On the Saturday, we were joined by 6B students, Tabitha Butterfill (LX) & Poppy Brooke Turner (WL)
We were delighted to hear that both Tabitha & Poppy gained selection to represent England at the Home International Regatta. They won in the eight & pair.
The Edward Beaugié Memorial Medal
The Edward Beaugié Memorial Medal 2023 was awarded to Kai Smith (MO 2021-2023).

‘‘Kai arrived at King’s for sixth form and has now been followed by his two younger brothers. Kai is an exceptional cricketer. Having coached many pupils at King’s, Kai has been the most dedicated, hardworking, and technical strong pupil I have ever worked with. Not only has he been doing cricket lessons in school, but he has also worked hard to fit in sessions outside of school both private, club and county. He is captain of the school 1st XI this year and recently scored an incredible 187 against Sutton Valence which left everyone watching in awe. Kai has already represented UAE and is waiting to become eligible for consideration to play for England in the future.’’

Rowing Scholarship Programme
Donations & Legacies
Fred Scarlett (LN 1988-1993) in the 7 seat at Sydney 2000.

The ‘Scarlett Rowing Scholarship’ is now on offer. We have a fund of £12,000 so far. We have asked King's to include the Rowing Scholarship Programme in their fundraising literature.

This is a Sixth Form scholarship available for boys and girls of character and integrity who display excellence at rowing, sculling or as a coxswain.

We will follow with the ‘Houghton Rowing Scholarship’ and 'Ransley Rowing Scholarship'.

We seek donations and legacies to fund this ongoing Rowing Scholarship Programme.

CPBC has charitable status. Donations and legacies are an excellent way to reduce tax, provide opportunity and support rowing at King’s.
