Please speak up for full funding of our schools!
The BOE's budget contains cost cuts that will save money for years to come. However, partly as a reaction to uncertainty at the state level, the Board of Finance (BOF) wants to cut the budget by $1 million.
As advocates for healthy start times, we have, for years, paid close attention to how the district is managed. Yes, it is a big misstep that this year's budget does not include a solution for starting school later. However, it is clear to us that administrators and the BOE spend a lot of time looking for ways to keep costs down while maintaining the excellence we all expect. We trust that they are careful with our tax dollars and we think they, not the BOF, are in the best position to make these decisions.
Why is this important for start times?
The leaner the budget, the less we will have to invest in healthy start times. Changing start times is necessary, even if it requires cuts in other areas, because our current schedule harms the health of thousands of kids every day. But our schools are our most important investment. It is in the town's best interest to do both - maintain our standard of excellence and further increase our return on investment by sending kids to school well-rested and ready to learn. Why would we underfund the best asset in our town?
What can you do?
On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at 7PM in Town Hall, there will be a Public Hearing on the budget. Please attend to show your support for the budget. The most impactful thing you can do is speak at a meeting. If you can't attend a meeting, please send emails to the Board of Finance. You can email all members at BoFDistribution@newcanaanct.gov. The full budget cycle meeting schedule can be found here. Parents are welcome at all meetings.
