President's Message

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Ohio House of Medicine Reception for Ohio Supreme Court candidates Justice Robert Cupp and Justice Terrence O’Donnell. The reception was co-hosted by several medical associations and their respective PACs, including the Ohio State Medical Association, Ohio Hospital Association and Ohio ACEP. Both Justice Cupp and Justice O'Donnell are up for re-election and deserve another term on the Court. Maintaining the advances the legislature has made the issue of tort reform is a primary goal of ours in Ohio, and these two justices will be helpful in this regard.

Advocacy events like these are some of the most important ways we advance the interests of our members. By hosting and attending such events, we can raise money for those who support the issues that matter most to us and at the same time, get valuable face time with candidates and elected officials.

For me, this election year is a great reminder of the importance of effective advocacy. Every organization’s greatest asset is the extent to which its members are willing to use their collective influence to affect positive change. In this way, every emergency physician that learns to be an effective advocate becomes a potential leader and activist for advancing emergency medicine. That’s why I’m urging our members to consider attending ACEP’s Leadership and Advocacy Conference, May 20-23, in Washington, DC.

In past years, this has been a phenomenal conference. This year will be no different. The 2012 Leadership and Advocacy conference will feature many workshops and sessions to give attendees the fundamentals of advocacy, public policy and public relations. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit with key Ohio legislators and their aides on Capitol Hill. ACEP will host a Congressional Reception at which we will bestow awards on several national leaders that been at the forefront of advocating for emergency medicine.

40th Anniversary Spotlight - from the Ohio ACEP Time Vault

Throughout 2012, we’ll be using this 40th Anniversary Spotlight segment to take a look back at some of the formative moments in Ohio ACEP’s history. Old articles, publications, photos and anything else we can dig up is fair game! Combing through this content has proven to be a fun and enlightening look at Ohio ACEP’s legacy. 1986 Brochure, Questions & Answers Regarding Ohio's New Seat Belt Law

In 1986, Ohio joined several other states by passing a law requiring seat belt use in passenger automobiles. New York State passed the first seat belt law in 1984 due in large part to the leadership of Dr. John States, an orthopedic surgeon and automotive safety advocate.

Though state laws mandating seat belt use would later prove extremely effective in reducing the rate of car accident fatalities, the laws were considered somewhat controversial at the time. Some were unconvinced of the safety of seat belts, while others objected to the laws on grounds of personal liberty.

To help explain the new law and address common concerns, Ohio ACEP and the Wright State University Medical School’s Department of Emergency Medicine teamed up to develop an educational brochure. This marked one of the first times Ohio ACEP was involved in developing materials to enhance awareness among the general public.

Advocacy Update

Chapter co-hosts House of Medicine fundraiser for Supreme Court candidates

On March 7, Ohio ACEP was one of several prominent medical associations that co-hosted a House of Medicine reception in support of Ohio Supreme Court candidates for re-election, Justice Robert Cupp and Terrence O’Donnell.

Ohio ACEP representatives, including Chapter President Tom Lukens and Executive Director Laura Tiberi, met one-on-one with the Justices who reaffirmed their commitment to important issues like tort reform. Ohio ACEP supports both Justice Cupp and Justice O’Donnell.

Now Accepting Nominations for The Bill Hall Award, EM Physician of the Year Award

Ohio ACEP is currently accepting nominations for the 2012 Emergency Medicine Physician of the Year Award and The Bill Hall Award for Service to Ohio Chapter ACEP. Presented each year, these awards recognize outstanding physicians that have made a difference in the field of emergency medicine.

The recipient of the 2012 Emergency Medicine Physician of the Year Award will have demonstrated excellence in clinical practice, served as a role model for other physicians and have actively served in community service and education. Additional criteria and nomination instructions can be found here.

The Bill Hall Award is named in honor of Dr. William Hall, President of Ohio ACEP in 1974 and 1975 and Chapter Treasurer from 1979 to 1985. It is presented to a past or present member of the Ohio ACEP Board of Directors to recognize his or her contributions of time and enthusiasm for advancing emergency medicine and patient care. Both awards will be presented at the All Ohio Emergency Medicine Assembly on June 5, 2012 at the Embassy Suites in Dublin. The deadline for nomination is April 16, 2012.

ITLS Ohio Holds 20th Anniversary Emergency Care Conference

International Trauma Life Support Ohio (ITLS Ohio) held the 20th Anniversary Emergency Care Conference the last weekend of February. Several high-

profile faculty spoke at the event including Dr. Sharon Mace and Dr. John Campbell, President and founder of ITLS. The Emergency Care Conference is Ohio’s premier pre-hospital conference attended yearly by hundreds of pre-hospital providers.

Ohio's 2012 Opiate Summit: Miles Traveled - Miles Ahead

On May 7 and 8 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Columbus, the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities (OACBHA) will hold Ohio’s 2012 Opiate Summit: Miles Traveled – Miles Ahead. The Summit will be offered in partnership with the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services and the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission. Summit attendees will have the chance to participate in workshops and panel discussions on battling opiate abuse.

Leaders Wanted—Board of Directors and Councillor nominations due April 1

Interested in a leadership role in Ohio ACEP? Consider submitting yourself as a candidate for the Board of Directors or as a Councillor! There are six open Board of Directors seats up for election this year, as well as five Chapter Council seats and thirteen Alternate Councillor seats to serve on the Ohio delegation at the October 6-7, 2012 Council meeting in Denver. Officers and Councillors will be elected by Chapter membership at the All Ohio Emergency Medicine Assembly on June 5.

Three Ohio metro areas' EDs ranked in top ten
A report by HealthGrades has ranked Cincinnati, Dayton and Cleveland-area emergency departments in the top ten nationally for lowest mortality rates among patients. In addition, HealthGrades has presented The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s emergency departments with their third consecutive Emergency Medicine Excellence Award.

ACEP President urges officials not to deny coverage based on final diagnosis
On February 29, MedPage Today's article "Coverage Denials Draw Ire of Emergency Docs," examined the alarming trend of denying emergency care coverage to Medicaid recipients whose visits later turn out to be "non-emergent." Medicaid officials in some states, such as Washington, have attempted to institute these rules in an attempt to balance projected budget deficits. ACEP President, Dr. David Seaberg, was quoted in the article expressing his concern that these rules leave the patient to judge the seriousness of their symptoms. "No patient should ever be in the position of having to diagnose himself," said Dr. Seaberg.

University Hospital installing new tele-medicine system for stroke care
On March 7, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that University Hospital in Cincinnati is implementing a state of the art tele-medicine system to remotely offer regional hospitals in outlying areas their team’s unique stroke expertise.

Cleveland Clinic adds images to electronic health records
On March 5, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on Cleveland Clinic's project to add impressive new imaging capabilities to its existing electronic health records system. The technology will allow doctors to layer a patient's medical images--such as X-rays, CT and MRI scans--over their written health records.
