TFP Publishing Trends - May 2012

In the month since we sent our first Technology for Publishing newsletter, there has again been significant change in the publishing industry. All of us recognize how quickly new technologies and publishing activities are now shifting on a daily basis. Recent research by the GfK MRI iPanel found that the majority of tablet owners would prefer to read magazines on their devices rather than in print. But, ironically, almost as many said that reading a traditional paper version of a magazine is a “more satisfying” experience. So, what’s missing from the tablet experience? Plenty, it seems.

DPS Release 20:
iPhone, Web Viewer, Social Sharing

Adobe has announced the latest release of the Digital Publishing Suite, Version 20, which brings many long-awaited features and several enhancements to smooth out this quickly expanding product. This release introduces DPS support for InDesign CS6, as well as feature parity for CS5 and CS5.5.

InDesign CS6 Feature Spotlight: Alternate Layout

One of the most anticipated features in the release of InDesign CS6 was the Alternate Layout function. Alternate Layout allows designers to create multiple versions of the same layout for different formats or devices, within a single InDesign file, saving time and increasing efficiency. The Alternate Layout feature could, for example, be used to create multiple sizes for an ad, all based on the original version, within a single document. Another example is creating a print layout and then adapting it for tablet use, again, within the same document.
