It's a true classic of the "Wine Merchant" offering
and a tradition we're determined to continue.
The supreme example of a Port House's wine, only produced in the very best vintages when conditions are perfect, Vintage Port needs time before it's consumed... a very long time!
If you want to guarantee stock of these fantastic wines, the way to buy them is "En Primeur". You'll be getting them at a great price and have the opportunity to store them in ideal conditions.
Only available to purchase in 6-bottle cases, Frazier's are offering Taylor's, Fonseca Guimaraens and Croft Quinta da Roeda
from the just released 2018 vintage.
On 23rd April, Taylor’s, Fonsecaand CroftPorts – all members of The Fladgate Partnership - have, by tradition, announced whether they will release a Vintage Port and, if so, which wines they will bottle.
The harvest of 2018 produced an unusual situation and, on St Georges Day last year, Taylor’s declared a ‘Classic Vintage’, something that neither Fonseca nor Croft did. Bottled last year, the 2018 Ports are now available to offer.
Commenting on the decision in 2020, Taylor’s managing director, Adrian Bridge said,“This is a year in which overall conditions were excellent but exceptional in the Douro Superior. As Taylor’s is the only one of our companies with extensive land holdings in this part of the Douro, it has been able to make a Classic. All our properties are always farmed so that every grape has the potential of being made into Vintage Port.”
Head winemaker, David Guimaraens, added:“The Douro Superior enjoyed the combination of abundant ground water and hot summer weather which often produces great Vintage Port. It has given us the excellent phenolic maturity typical of a hot ripening season but the fine multi-layered fruit, fresh acidity we normally see in cooler years.”
Adrian resumed,“Although a Classic declaration normally only happens about three times a decade, the exceptional run of years has meant that Taylor’s is able to make a third in a row.
This is very unusual but our principle is that we only declare a Classic Vintage when the quality is there and this is dictated by the year, not by any other consideration”.
En Primeur Purchase - 2018 Taylor's Vintage Port
Adrian Bridge, Managing Director:“Although a Classic declaration normally only happens about three times a decade, the exceptional run of years has meant that Taylor’s has been able to make a third in a row. This is very unusual but our principle is that we declare a Classic Vintage when the quality is there. This is dictated by the year, not by any other consideration. All our properties are farmed so that every grape has the potential to become Vintage Port. In 2018, overall conditions were excellent but in the Douro Superior they were exceptional. In view of the current economic situation, we will bottle in July as usual but will not release the wine until early 2021”.
Impressive purple-black core with a narrow purple rim. An intense burst of powerful woodland fruit, a dense coulis of blackberry and blackcurrant, almost overwhelms the nose. The black fruit aromas are infused with discreet notes of cherry and mocha.
As would be expected of Taylor’s, the fruit is very fine and focused, but the year seems to have given it an additional layer of density and weight. A familiar veil of violet scent hangs over the wine, together with a fragrance of rose petal and wild, minty herbal aromas.
On the palate, the wine has beautifully ripe tannins, which integrate perfectly into the mid-palate, providing both structure and volume, and then break out on the finish with a firm wiry, grip.
The palate closes with a powerful tide of fresh, complex fruit flowing endlessly through the finish.
In the 2018, the Taylor traits of fine fruit and inner power combine seamlessly with the ripeness and depth typical of the vintage.
En Primeur Purchase - 2018 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port
Fonseca will release a 2018 Guimaraens Vintage Port, the first bottling under the Guimaraens label since 2015.
Adrian Bridge remarked,“I am delighted that we are releasing Guimaraens Vintage from 2018.
The Guimaraens concept is unique, a wine with the same make up and character as the classic Fonseca Vintages but made in a more approachable, early drinking style.”
David Guimaraens added,“I believe that the 2018 is one of the finest recent examples of a Guimaraens Vintage, with its rich, dense woodland fruit and sturdy but well integrated tannins.”
Impenetrable purple-black at the centre, with a narrow band of violet on the rim. The nose is dense and compact, with impressive depth and background.
The fruit quality is superb, a luscious blend of black and red berry aromas which is the hallmark feature of Fonseca’s vintage ports, mingled with notes of dark chocolate.
Around this core of powerful, complex fruit is an aura of balsamic, minty scents. Although the nose is sensuous and seductive, there is an attractive firm edge, provided by graphite and a flinty minerality.
The first impression on the palate is of silky smoothness but the tannins suddenly burst out on the finish with an assertive pungency and a wire of acidity runs through the wine to give it a lively freshness.
There is an abundance of crisp, berry fruit flavour which carries into the long finish.
This superb Guimaraens Vintage Port displays stamina and depth but is sufficiently supple and expressive for early drinking.
En Primeur Purchase - 2018 Croft Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port
Adrian Bridge, Managing Director:“The Quinta da Roêda estate produced excellent wines in 2018. The old historic terraces at Roêda consistently produce wine of vintage quality. They are now being joined by more recent plantings resulting from the investments made since we acquired Croft nearly thirty years ago. I am delighted that we will be bottling a Quinta da Roêda single-quinta Vintage Port from 2018. It displays the characteristic ripe fruit and scented herbal character that we associate with the Roêda wines but the year has added a thread of fresh acidity and firm, wiry tannins to give the wine structure. As usual, we will be bottling the wine in July. However, given the current economic circumstances, it will be held back for the time being and released early in 2021.
Very deep purple black at the centre, with a narrow purple red rim. Although the nose displays the seductive, opulent red fruit character which is a familiar feature of Roêda vintage ports, there are also intense, woodland berry aromas which add focus and finesse.
As usual, the fruit is wrapped in an envelope of exotic balsamic, minty, eucalyptus scents. The first impression on the palate is of roundness and a rich, velvety texture but there is excellent acidity and well-integrated grippy tannins which emerge on the finish.
The finish is powerful and very long with persistent crisp, red berry flavours.
Although, as always, the 2018 Roêda Vintage is ripe and seductive, the characteristics of the year and the contribution of the wines from Roêda’s oldest vineyard plots has placed this superb single-quinta Vintage Port at the elegant and restrained end of the spectrum.
