Good futures can be yours

From IoC President
Geoff Rhodes

As a new college term begins, it's time to look beyond COVID-19 to the fascinating and well-paid futures which can be yours. Check out the GoConstruct website and look at what you could be paid. You'll soon see why a career in carpentry or joinery is worth studying for. A career in the wood sector is creative, with no two days the same. And at the end of the working day you can see and take pride in what you've achieved. Move into this term with hope and enjoy every day.  You're working with the world's most sustainable building material, and that helps the planet. If you have any queries or comments feel free to contact me.

Ideas please?

Can you help us? We'd like to know how long you think teaching videos should be, to best help you to carry on learning when you're not in college. Is 10 minutes too little? Or is 20 minutes about right? Please email us with your views. they'd be a great help to all.

Award for City Hub college best student

Our corporate member, Axminster Tools & Machinery  have kindly donated a set of tools which will form the basis of our first-ever student member award.  Initially nominations for the award will come from the IoC member colleges where City Hubs have been set up in the past eighteen months, widening to other colleges and City Hubs over time. Watch out for more news in the next edition of In The Groove and in the meantime take advantage of the 5% discount that Axminster offers students on their website

Join the CO2 campaign

The wood industries across the UK are coming together in a new campaign to highlight the ability of wood to store CO2. Trees take up CO2 while actively growing. When they're harvested the CO2 stays inside the wood for as long as it lasts. So  building with wood or using wood for joinery is a great way to help the climate. Visit the Wood CO2ts Less campaign on the Wood For Good website.

Introducing American Hardwoods

We're pleased to announce that the American Hardwood Export Council in Europe has become a corporate member of IoC. For our student members, AHEC have lots of information to tap into, including a page where you can compare different wood species and their working properties. Their Gallery also contains videos showing American hardwoods being used in their many innovative and inspirational design projects. There are plenty of interesting publications too.
Next City Hub launch

The next IoC City Hub is currently scheduled for launch on 15th October, hosted by Leeds College of Building. Speakers will cover career opportunities, heritage work, the timber frame building sector and a talk by IoC Fellow John Apps about his lifetime in carpentry & joinery.  See some of his work and keep up to date on our Student member Twitter and Instagram feeds.
