SERVICE BULLETIN

Dear Ones,

Thích Nhất Hạnh, the Vietnamese monk who popularized mindfulness in the West and whose vast peace writings introduced countless people to Buddhist ideas and practices, died Jan. 22, 2022 at the age of 95  at Từ Hiếu Pagoda, the Buddhist temple in Hue, Vietnam, where he entered monastic life at the age of 16 and returned to prepare for his death in 2019.

Nhất Hạnh (he was known as "Thầy" to his followers) was said to have been the second best known Buddhist teacher in the contemporary world after the Dalai Lama. (Thích is an honorific and is Vietnamese for Sakya, which is the Buddha's family name.)

Martin Luther King Jr. considered Nhất Hạnh a friend and nominated him for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize. Years later, Oprah Winfrey interviewed him, saying he had deeply influenced her thinking.

I am eternally grateful to him for teaching the Art of Mindful Living, https://plumvillage.org/mindfulness-practice/, a life giving spiritual practice of slowing down, bringing ourselves back into our bodies, back into this moment, and experiencing our unity with all Creation. This he says, is Nirvana, the Kingdom of Heaven, is at hand.

I leave you with some quotes from "Thầy"
    •    Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. ...

    •    There is no way to happiness - happiness is the way. ...

    •    It's very important that we re-learn the art of resting and relaxing.

May it be so with you!

peace,
Pastor Laurie

JOIN THE MOVEMENT
New UCC website launches to equip and empower racial justice efforts. Since the announcement of the Join the Movement initiative at General Synod 33, we have been working to develop the Join the Movement website so it can become a hub of story-sharing, resources, news and events that draws others to join the movement and opens hearts to new possibilities and practices of racial justice.

The new website launched January 17! Please take a moment to visit and see what's new. Stories, resources, timely calls to action and reflections on current events in the movement toward racial justice will be added regularly, so make sure to bookmark the page and return often.

OPERATION "WE CARE" VALENTINE'S DAY 2022
You are invited to give a personalized card of caring to one of the seniors living in St Mary’s, a crowded transitional house here in Oakland. Our mission, if you choose to accept it, is to care for, and uplift, those who may feel forgotten. Charlie Holmes will be distributing names this Sunday! As Charlie wisely puts it, It might help the way one looks at things, and the way one looks at things determines tomorrow's outcome.

COVID PROTOCOLS AT SKYLINE
Effective February 1, 2022: City of Oakland to Require Proof of Vaccination at Indoor Public Locations. To create and access your digital vaccine record please sign up here.

As a reminder, given the steep rise in cases due to the omicron variant, fellowship time is discontinued now through Feb 6 to ensure safety for our community. We will continue hybrid worship on Sundays at 10 am, and will follow CDC guidelines more rigorously during worship.

As the pandemic continues, we are committed to prioritizing outdoor gatherings when possible and sensible. We follow the CDC’s guidance in aiming for outdoors over indoors, distanced over -crowded, masked (K or N 95 masks) over unmasked, and short over long. We also encourage people to utilize rapid tests when possible before attending in-person events.

Visit our website to review church activity guidelines. If you have any questions, please contact any of our Site Protection Plan Team Volunteers, Carolyn Noble, Catherine Kessler, Pastor Laurie, and Tom Manley.
