New Nielsen trio secure top six ELMS result on debut

The first round of the 2021 European Le Mans Series took place Sunday in Barcelona, and with it, Nielsen Racing fielded two distinctive gold liveried Ligier JS P320s with both completing the gruelling four-hour event to finish within the top ten.

The new line-up of Nick Adcock, Max Koebolt and Austin McCusker recording a solid sixth position in the #6 entry on their combined debut. This was a strong showing from the trio after a difficult run in qualifying that left them 16th on the grid. Nick ran a strong double stint before Max jumped in for his debut with the team and immediately showed his race pace. Austin ran the final stint to bring the car home in sixth.

Tony Wells and Colin Noble put in a strong recovery drive in the #7 Ligier to finish in ninth position following a start line incident triggered by a rival ahead. It was later deemed that the #26 entry had backed up the field in an excessive manner at the start and as a result of this Tony damaged the front right of his Ligier, necessitating a nose change at the first stop.

This cost the duo, dropping them off the lead lap in the process. Tony continued his stint, maintaining his position before handing over to Colin who was able to make gains in the final hour to move back into the top ten.

Nick Adcock
“We’ve all gelled well this week and although we didn’t qualify that well, the car was fantastic in the race and we were able to go up from 16th to sixth. I boxed in P7 and then the guys had some good pace, so we’re happy with the climb through the field and we’ll take that. We have good potential, and we want to take podiums with this line-up.”
Austin McCusker
“It was a good race, we started in 16th and ended sixth with the guys at Nielsen Racing keeping it all very clean in the pitstops. They were rapid, gave us a good car and strategy, so it’s a good starting point for myself, Max and Nick. It’s been our first week all together and while we’re always looking to improve, we really enjoyed it and look forward to the next five rounds.”
Max Koebolt
“It’s a strong start. We struggled a little in the pre-season test, but when it mattered the car felt really good. There’s always ‘ifs’ in the race as we were hit by a LMP2 car [#26] so maybe we could have finished in third, but I think we did a great job, all of us were fast and didn’t get any penalties.”
